The GZA-651 ( russian ГЗА-651 ) was a medium-sized bus, which in the Soviet Union 1949-1973 first from Gorkowski Awtobusny Zavod (JCO) ( Russian Горьковский автобусный завод (ГЗА) , not to be confused with the much better-known parent company GAZ ) was made. From 1952 the manufacturers changed, whereby identical vehicles were produced under the abbreviations PAZ-651 and KAwZ-651 . There were some modifications, including versions with all-wheel drive ( KAwZ-663 ). The successor was the KAwZ-685 .
Manufacturing history of the vehicle
In 1949, the production of a bus based on the chassis of the GAZ-51 truck began in Gorkovsky Avtobusny Zavod . It replaced the GAZ-03-30 , which had been built since 1933 , production of which was discontinued in 1950. The body had a wooden framework.
In 1952, production was relocated to the Pavlovsky Avtobusny Sawod (PAZ for short) and the bus was consequently renamed PAZ-651. The first five vehicles left the factory on August 5, 1952. At the same time, in 1953, the manufacture of wooden body parts for the vehicles began in the Riga repair shop number 2 (RARZ, later the Riga bus factory ). From 1955, the plant built its own, similar minibus on the same chassis, the RAF-251 .
In 1957, the production of wooden to all-metal structures was finally converted. These were named PAZ-651A. Various special variants were also included in the production, which were not necessarily designed for passenger transport (ambulance vehicles, mobile sales stands).
In January 1958, KAwZ began production of the vehicle now known as KAwZ-651. Until 1961 PAZ and KAwZ manufactured in parallel, then KAwZ took over the sole production. As a replacement, PAZ produced the PAZ-652 in series from 1958 . Two years before production at KAwZ was discontinued, there was a revised version, the KAwZ-651B. In 1973 the production was completely converted to the KAwZ-685 model.
Under the designation KAwZ-663, otherwise structurally identical buses with all-wheel drive for difficult road conditions were produced on the chassis of the GAZ-63 .
The bonnet and radiator grille adopted from the GAZ-51 are visually striking. In particular, the models for export were equipped with front and rear bumpers and chrome-plated headlight sockets.
Modifications
PAZ-651A - Vehicle built from 1957 with an all-metal body. Later also listed as KAwZ-651A . The KAwZ version differed in the additional heated passenger area.
PAZ-651W - ambulance. Also listed as PAZ-653 . Production only came to PAZ in 1953, a year later than that of the basic variant. It was designed for four loungers or 13 seats. Some of the vehicles were also designed as prisoner transporters. The military received an ambulance version with all-wheel drive under the name AS-1 based on the GAZ-63 chassis.
PAZ-651G - a version with folding seats on the side walls. In this way, the passenger compartment could also be used to transport freight. Only the seat of the conductor is fixed. The body and frame have been reinforced. This variant was primarily intended for use in rural areas.
PAZ-654 - a custom-made product for the Ministry of Defense. Only a few copies were made.
PAZ-657 - A special version for transporting bread and baked goods, built from 1954 to 1958. The vehicle looked more like a truck than a bus. There were large doors on the sides of the body for easier loading and unloading.
PAZ-659 - A version converted into a mobile kiosk. The body is a wooden frame planked with sheet metal. From the second half of the 1950s, also as an all-metal version. Production came to KAwZ in 1961, where it ended in 1968.
PAZ-661 - a vehicle for transporting clothes, similar to the PAZ-657. However, it did not learn that the bread wagon was widely used.
KAwZ-651G - This is not the continuation of production of the PAZ-651G, but a driving school vehicle.
KAwZ-651Sch - This vehicle was equipped with a liquid gas drive and had an engine output of 62 hp.
KAwZ-663 - The vehicle was made on the chassis of the GAZ-63 and GAZ-66 trucks . It has all-wheel drive and was designed for the oil, gas and mining industries. It was manufactured from 1966 to 1975, a little longer than the standard model.
In addition to the versions listed, vehicles specifically for tropical climates were also manufactured and exported.
Technical specifications
Due to the long construction time of the model of 24 years, there are minor technical changes over time. The data listed here apply to the KAwZ-651A variant. The slightly different data in the info box above apply to the original variant GZA-651.
