The PAZ-3201 ( Russian ПАЗ-3201 ) is an all -terrain minibus with all-wheel drive from the Soviet manufacturer Pavlovsky Avtobusny Zavod . The vehicle was mass-produced from 1972 to 1989 and is based on the widespread PAZ-672 , which is the normal street version without off-road chassis.

As early as 1966, PAZ began to manufacture prototypes of the planned PAZ-672 model with all-wheel drive. In addition, the standard body received the chassis of the all-terrain truck GAZ-66 , which had been in mass production since 1964. At the same time, the rear passenger door was removed and three additional seats were placed in the place of the earlier exit. This change was justified in the intended use of the vehicle: the all-wheel-drive bus was intended for rural regions, not for city traffic. Correspondingly, getting on and off quickly was not as important as the additional seating capacity. In contrast to the truck, however, the bus did not have low-pressure tires, but the usual road version tires. In 1968 the vehicle was renamed PAZ-3201 in accordance with new standards . Since the basic model PAZ-672 was already in mass production, PAZ decided not to change the number.

In 1972, serial production of the PAZ-3201 began in Pavlovo. Up to this point, around 50 pre-series copies had been built. By 1982, 4680 copies had rolled off the production line, around 1800 of them in the special PAZ-3201S version for northern areas. As with the basic model, a minor revision followed. From then on, the bus was referred to as PAZ-320101. Originally it was planned to rename the version for cold areas to PAZ-3201 01, i.e. to distinguish only by the lower case of the last two digits. However, this met with resistance. It was feared that the likelihood of confusion could be too high. In the end, the old designation PAZ-3201S remained, although the revisions also came into force for this variant. The vehicles were delivered in red or orange to make them easier to find in emergencies in remote regions.

By 1989 a total of 13,874 copies of all versions were built, including 6114 PAZ-3201S (all years of construction) and about 4200 pieces of the revised model PAZ-320101 (without PAZ-3201S). Although efforts to find a successor had been going on at least since 1988, the PAZ-3206 was not taken into series production until 1995 .

Model variants

  • PAZ-672WP - series of first prototypes, built 1966–1971. Renamed to PAZ-3201 from 1968.
  • PAZ-3201 - base model, produced from 1972 to 1982.
  • PAZ-320101 - base model, manufactured from 1982 to 1989.

  • PAZ-3201UM - prototype from 1979 with two passenger doors , only one copy was built.
  • PAZ-3201UPP - one -off production from 1981, only one copy built. The interior was designed in such a way that it served the further training of the staff of a company (installation of tables, film projectors).
