The PAZ-672 ( Russian ПАЗ-672 ) is a minibus made by the Soviet manufacturer Pavlovsky Avtobusny Zavod . The vehicle was mass-produced from 1968 to 1989 and was widely used in Russia and other states of the former Eastern Bloc. Almost 300,000 pieces were produced in various variants, some of which are still in use today, around 30 years after production ended. Based on the PAZ-672, an all-wheel drive bus was built especially for poor road conditions, the PAZ-3201 .

The start of production of the PAZ-672 was originally planned for 1965, but the project was delayed. In 1966 work on several prototypes was finished, which were then sent on a test drive from Pavlovo to Yerevan and back. It was not until November 1967 that PAZ began gradually to remove the PAZ-652 , which had been manufactured since 1958, from its range. The first ten buses of the new PAZ-672 type had been produced by the end of the year, and the last PAZ-652 rolled off the production line at the end of 1968. The reason for the delays were major modifications to the plant and the facility.

The original plan was to redesign the body shape, which is still very similar to the PAZ-652. For this purpose, systems should be exchanged and expanded during operation. Ultimately, this did not happen for unknown reasons. The vehicles differ mainly in the built-in technology, but hardly visually. The vehicle's engine is identical to that of the GAZ-53A truck , as is the transmission. The fittings were taken from the ZIL-158 bus and some chassis parts come from the ZIL-130 . In 1979 the lighting system was revised.

In 1982 the manufacturer revised the vehicle, which was identified by the designation PAZ-672M. By 1989, 190,150 vehicles of the basic variant had rolled off the production line; a total of 288,688 units of all model variants were built. The successor was the PAZ-3205 , on the basis of which all special vehicles were also manufactured from the end of 1989.

Model variants

In the course of almost 25 years of production history, modifications have been made to the vehicle again and again. In addition, various special vehicles based on the PAZ-672 were manufactured, some of which had nothing to do with the original purpose - passenger transport. The list is not exhaustive.

  • PAZ-672 - basic model, built 1968–1982.
  • PAZ-672M - basic model, built 1982–1989, discontinued in favor of the successor PAZ-3205.
  • PAZ-672A - prototype of an excursion bus from 1967, only one copy was made.
  • PAZ-672WJu - ready-to-drive chassis produced from 1971 to 1989, which was intended for export to Cuba . At times an annual production of 2500 pieces was achieved. Our own bus bodies were assembled in Cuba.
  • PAZ-762D - experimental version with a diesel engine from the 1980s. The concept was discarded after a few vehicles because the engine did not fit into the engine compartment of the bus.
  • PAZ-672G - Special version for mountainous areas. Seat belts were installed on the passenger seats, the roof glazing was removed and the braking system improved. The bus also had a second fuel tank with a capacity of 105 liters.
  • PAZ-672K - prototype with revised angular body. The vehicle was created in the 1970s and did not go into series production.
  • PAZ-672S - variant for use in northern areas with double glazing and red or orange signal paint.
  • PAZ-672T - “Tourist” version with more comfortable seats with high backrests and doors that can be opened manually.
  • PAZ-672TL - Only ten pieces were custom made for the 1980 Olympic Games.
  • PAZ-672U - export version for temperate climates.
  • PAZ-672Ju - Export version for countries with tropical climates.
  • PAZ-3201 - all-wheel drive version of the PAZ-762. In addition to the type of drive, a clear distinguishing feature is that the PAZ-3201 has only one passenger door, the PAZ-762 has two.
  • PAZ-3742 and PAZ-37421 - These vehicles received a closed body and a cooling system and were therefore used as trucks for the transport of perishable goods. The first prototypes appeared in 1977 and series production began in 1981.
  • PAZ-3916 - special vehicle in the form of an broadcast vehicle for television broadcasts. The unit price of such a vehicle was 250,000  rubles , a total of 16 pieces were built.
  • WgArZ-3928 - A blood donation mobile based on the PAZ-672.
  • KS-201 - A hearse based on the PAZ-672. By default, a black ribbon was painted under the window line.
