The PAZ-652 ( Russian ПАЗ-652 ) is a minibus made by the Soviet manufacturer Pavlovsky Avtobusny Zavod . The vehicle was produced in series from 1958 to 1968 and was technically based on the GAZ-51 truck . Visually, the bus hardly differed from its successor, the PAZ-672 , which was manufactured from 1968 . In total, over 62,000 copies of the PAZ-652 in different variants were produced in 10 years.

The Pavlovo plant began manufacturing buses in 1952. First the GZA-651 was produced, from 1955 the first own minibus was developed. Like its predecessor, it was based on the chassis of the GAZ-51 truck in order to have as few different components as possible. A total of seven different prototypes were built, which differed in terms of both interior and design. The model variants implemented later were based in part on these drafts. In contrast to its predecessor, the engine was housed inside the rounded bus body. The GZA-651 still had a distinctive hood in a long- hood design .

The serial production of the PAZ-652 and thus the first bus developed by PAZ itself began in 1958. The production of the predecessor was transferred to KAwZ . The design of the sixth prototype was adopted as the basic version. The output of the truck engine has been increased to 90 hp and the wheelbase has been lengthened by 30 centimeters compared to its predecessor. Therefore, 23 seats could be accommodated in the redesigned body, four more than before. The body was built on a sheet steel frame. Typical of the first generation are the corrugated side panels below the windows, which were replaced by smooth panels on the PAZ-652B from 1963 and on all subsequent models.

The curved and split panoramic window is characteristic of the bus . The panes of the windows for the passengers were made of toughened safety glass to prevent injuries from sharp glass splinters in the event of an accident. A special design feature is that the engine cooler was placed next to the engine instead of in front of it as usual. However, it was never possible to completely prevent gasoline vapor from the engine compartment from entering the ventilation or heating system and thus into the passenger compartment.

During the first few years there were several minor problems with the construction. In order to fix them, the revised version PAZ-652B was introduced in early 1963. It received a reinforced frame made of thicker sheet steel. The body was reinforced at heavily stressed areas by additional sheet metal, the arrangement of the lamps changed several times during the production period. From 1964 a reinforced front axle was installed, which took over parts from the ZIL-130 truck . Various changes have also been made to the chassis to increase passenger comfort. The driver's seat was separated from the passenger compartment by a plexiglass wall.

The PAZ-652B was built until 1968, of this version around 44,000 copies were made. A total of exactly 62,121 vehicles of all variants were produced. The successor PAZ-672 , built from 1968 onwards , which was visually almost unchanged, was manufactured until 1989 and almost 300,000 times.

Model variants

A total of three different versions of the PAZ-652 were built, plus the seven different prototypes.

  • PAZ-652 - The basic version rolled off the production line in 1958 and, apart from small changes, was manufactured unchanged until 1963.
  • PAZ-652B - Revised and mass-produced vehicle from 1963, around 44,000 units were built. In 1968 production was stopped in favor of the PAZ-672.
  • PAZ-652T - Version intended for tourism. Between 1962 and 1963 about 10 copies were made, which had various additional comforts. Shelves, luggage compartments, more comfortable seats and a radio have been installed. In addition, the rear door was omitted. The vehicles never reached the original customer, Intourist , and the order was canceled. Later vehicles equipped in this way were built on the basis of other buses such as the LAZ-697 or the LiAZ-677 .

Designed for the Soviet foreign trade organization Awtoexport in 1962 on the paper of the PAZ-652L . The plan was to create a right-hand drive version and to mirror the entire design of the bus. Although there were considerable difficulties, as the redesign of the engine compartment in particular caused major problems, the construction was completed on time. The order was withdrawn from Awtoexport before a prototype was built, so production never came about.
