The Kurganski Awtobusny Zavod ( Russian Курганский автобусный завод , abbreviated KAvZ (Russian КАвЗ) in German Kurgan bus plant, scientifically Kurganskij avtobusnyj Zavod ) is a Russian bus manufacturer , in Kurgan is located. A newer spelling of the manufacturer is KAWZ.

history

January 14, 1958 is given as the official founding date of the plant. From this point on, the production of the KAwZ-651 began , which was completely relocated from the Pavlovsky Avtobusny Sawod (PAZ) to Kurgan by 1961 . KAwZ did not manufacture the entire bus, the chassis and the drive train came as supplier parts from GAZ . At the same time, the factory was expanded, and various production areas were added by 1967. By 1963 the production capacity increased to 5,000 vehicles per year and in 1967 it was 50,000. Bus built.

Between 1971 and 1973, the plant completely switched its production to a new model, the KAwZ-685 . This was built with small changes for 22 years until 1993. From 1981 the factory also worked on prototypes for larger vehicles. After several dozen copies, however, the project was dropped.

From 1993 the company manufactured the KAwZ-3976, among other types . Like the first bus from KAwZ, this was also based on truck technology supplied by GAZ. Also in the early 1990s KAwZ built buses from the Hungarian manufacturer Ikarus under license for Russian cities , in particular the types Ikarus 260 and Ikarus 280. However, the cooperation was broken off after ten vehicles.

Like other manufacturers, the plant suffered from a severe lack of orders due to the economic situation in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union . Several new designs were developed, including those based on the ZIL-5301 truck , but none of them were widely used. In June 1997, proceedings before an insolvency court were temporarily suspended, in 1998 the proceedings were closed and the plant continued to produce. In 2001 the Kurganski Awtobusny Sawod, which still had the capacity to manufacture 20,000 buses per year, was again on the verge of bankruptcy. In the same year the company joined RusPromAwto, a predecessor company of the GAZ group . Around this time, the PAZ company took over the production of the bus, now known as KAwZ-4320.

In 2002 and 2003 the plant began to manufacture school buses. Thanks to state funding and the fact that the vehicles met the latest national standards at the time, the Kurganski Avtobusny Sawod was able to record successes in this area. Around 1000 vehicles were produced in 2003.

Today the company only produces two different buses in a few different designs. With the transfer of RusPromAwto to the GAZ Group in 2005, KAwZ also belongs to this group of companies.
