The KAwZ-685 ( Russian КАвЗ-685 ), later also called KAwZ-3270 and KAwZ-3271 in the course of model updates , is a Soviet-made bus. The vehicle was built by Kurganski Avtobusny Zavod in Kurgan on the basis of the chassis of the GAZ-53 truck .

History of the vehicle

The previous model KAwZ-651

At the end of the 1960s, prototypes of a new mid-range bus were manufactured at KAwZ to replace the KAwZ-651 . Finally in 1971 there were a number of test vehicles, which, however, differed from the later production model. They still had a four-part windshield, which was replaced in series production by the characteristic curved two-part windshield. Series production began in 1973.

In 1975 the lighting system was revised and the round rear lights were replaced by angular components. At the same time, a second pair of indicators was installed.

In 1977 the vehicle was awarded the State Seal of Quality of the USSR and was mass-produced in various versions until 1989. In 1993 production finally ended in favor of the successor model KAwZ-3976.

technical description

Just like its predecessor, the bus was mainly designed for use in rural areas, hence the structure on an additionally reinforced truck frame and the enormous ground clearance. The passenger cabin is larger than the KAwZ-651. The driving performance has also been improved, the maintenance intervals extended and the technical reliability increased.

The vehicle frame is a reinforced version of the chassis of the GAZ-53 truck. It is clearly visible that the sheet metal parts were also taken over from the front of the truck. A newly designed cardan shaft, a new gearbox and a multi-plate clutch were used in the drive train in order to be able to transfer the higher torque of the eight-cylinder carburettor engine to the rear axle. Since 1975 the brake system has been designed as a hydraulic two-circuit system with a brake booster.

The interior of the bus can be heated and is equipped with upholstered seats for the passengers. The ventilation is implemented via sliding windows at the side and skylights, and interior lighting has also been installed. A general overhaul of the vehicles was carried out after an average of 260,000 kilometers.

Modifications

  • KAwZ-685S - Designed for operation at temperatures down to minus 60 ° C, often in orange. The model was designed for use in the northern regions of Russia and is equipped with double glazing, a heavily insulated passenger compartment and a separate area for the driver. Two independent heating systems, an additional battery and an additional tank with a capacity of 56 liters of fuel were installed. Seals and tires were designed for the low temperatures, and additional fog lights were installed.
  • The KAwZ-685G was a version for operation at three to four thousand meters above sea level and generally in mountainous regions. The cooling system was enlarged by an expansion tank and an additional brake system was installed at the start of production (later adopted for the basic model). The passenger seats were also fitted with seat belts.
  • KAwZ-685M - Built from 1984 to 1986, a modernized variant with a ZMZ-53-11 petrol engine. The new engine has reduced fuel consumption and increased power to 120 hp. The front axle has been reinforced, as has the suspension. Visually, the variant hardly differs from the basic version.
  • KAwZ-3270 - Built from 1986 to 1991, modernized version of the KAwZ-685M. The vehicle code has been adapted in accordance with the Russian standards that have been in force since 1966 . From 1987, minor technical changes to the exterior mirrors, windshield wipers and the roof hatches followed.
  • KAwZ-3271 - built 1991 to 1993, transition to model KAwZ-3976 . Since a new truck had been manufactured at GAZ since 1989, preparations were also made to switch to a new bus model. The KAwZ-3271 was still built on the frame of the GAZ-53, but parts from the new GAZ-3307 truck model were also used. These were, for example, the steering column and instruments. The series production of the vehicle ran parallel to that of the successor until the beginning of 1993.
  • In the transition phase to the production of the successor, models with liquid gas drive were also delivered.
