The plant was founded in 1950 as the production facility of Uralselmasch, a plant from Bissert that produced agricultural equipment. Forage harvesters, threshing machines and tractor parts were manufactured until the 1960s.

In 1961, the production of the MAZ-535 heavy tractor unit was relocated from the Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod to the Uralselmasch branch in Kurgan, giving the company a new direction. From 1963 the MAZ-537 was also built here, which prompted the Soviet leadership to rename the plant to Kurganski Sawod Koljosnych Tjagachei on June 11, 1966. The vehicle was to remain in production until 1990 and would become one of the plant's most famous products. Various other military machines such as the MAZ-538 were later built at KZKT.

The first self-developed vehicle was the KZKT-545 in the 1970s. It was essentially a MAZ-537 with an enlarged cabin.

During perestroika , the plant remained without commissions for a long time. Nevertheless, a new generation of heavy military tractors was developed. The base vehicle was the KZKT-7428 "Russitsch" , which was produced in series from 1990 and which replaced the MAZ-537 after 30 years of production. During this time, the former state-owned company was also restructured and converted into an open joint stock company (OAO). The new company name was "OAO Russitsch" (Russian ОАО "Русич").

Despite the new model, the production figures continued to decline, especially after the year 2000. In 2003, 32 vehicles were built, in 2004 only 26. A year later, in 2005, a court declared the company insolvent for the first time. As a result, the company moved to sell the plant and the associated real estate. On April 28, 2011, the company now trading under the name “OAO Russitsch - KZKT” was declared bankrupt again in court. The company has now been completely dissolved.
