The MAZ-535 ( Russian МАЗ-535 ) truck is a heavy tractor from the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod , which was developed in the 1950s for the Soviet military to transport missiles and tanks .

Vehicle history

During the years of World War II , the Red Army experienced that there was a crucial lack of means of transport for tracked vehicles. There were no Russian-made trucks that would have been able to transport a T-34 tank , for example . After the war, tractor units based on the JaAZ-210 were developed for this purpose, but this did not bring the desired success.

In the early 1950s, the responsible planners came to the conclusion that a vehicle based on the trucks produced at the time would not meet the requirements set by the army. Accordingly, the MAZ plant in Minsk received the order in 1954 to develop a suitable vehicle. In addition to the size, the four permanently driven axles with large individual tires and a tire pressure control system, the built-in power steering and the hydrodynamic transmission, which does not require manual coupling, were new compared to the previous vehicles . The first two working prototypes were produced in May and June 1956, respectively. In the summer of 1957, the vehicle was ready for series production, which began in 1958.

Production in Minsk did not last long. Instead, as early as 1960, the production of the MAZ-535 began to be relocated to Kurgan near Uralselmasch. Since the vehicles were technically very complex, only small numbers were built. In 1961 around 200 pieces rolled off the line, in 1962 only 150 copies. Production officially ended at the end of 1963, although 1964 is also given as the last year of construction. The MAZ-535 was replaced by its more powerful successor, the MAZ-537 , which was built in large-scale production over the next 30 years and was widely used in various armies of the Warsaw Pact .

Model versions

In the short production time of the vehicle, there were four different model variants.

  • MAZ-535 - various prototypes before the actual series production. After a vehicle in the test phase suffered an accident in which the frame warped, the decision was made to develop the MAZ-535A.
  • MAZ-535A - Revised version with ballast bed , including a reinforced frame, built in series from 1958.
  • MAZ-535B - Mobile rocket launch pad for ballistic missiles manufactured from 1959 .
  • MAZ-535W - version manufactured between 1959 and 1963 as a tractor unit for 25-tonne trailers. The MAZ-537 was developed on the basis of this vehicle.
