The MAZ-5309 ( Russian МАЗ-5309 ) is a truck from the Belarusian manufacturer Minski Awtomobilny Sawod (Russian Минский автомобильный завод, short MAZ or МАЗ). It has been in series production since 2008 and is the all-wheel drive variant of the MAZ-5340 . Both vehicles are powered by an eight-cylinder diesel engine made in Russia. The manufacturer has not had the vehicle in its range since around 2015, but as of 2019 it will still be offered as a chassis for fire fighting vehicles with superstructures from external companies.

Under the name MAZ-5309RR , the truck, converted as a rally vehicle, has been used by the works team for several years, including in the Dakar Rally .

At the turn of the millennium, Minski Awtomobilny Sawod developed the MAZ-5316 , which was the manufacturer's first military two-axle vehicle with all-wheel drive since the MAZ-502 from the 1950s. When the civilian model generations changed from the MAZ-5336 and MAZ-5337 to the MAZ-5340 at the beginning of the 2000s, a vehicle with all-wheel drive was also developed based on the new two-axle vehicle. The resulting MAZ-5309 was put into series production in 2008. Like its predecessor, the truck received an eight-cylinder diesel engine with 330 hp of the JaMZ-238 type . The manual gearbox is also supplied by the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod .

The MAZ-5309 was offered in different versions ex works, including with a flatbed and as a chassis without a body. As of 2019, the vehicle will no longer be officially offered by the manufacturer. However, it is still used by external companies as the basis for fire engines. The reason is likely that the engines only meet the Euro 2 emissions standard and more modern units have never been installed. A successor does not yet exist.

In the course of the production time, the cabin was visually and technically revised.

The MAZ works team has been participating in various rally events with a modified MAZ-5309 (referred to as MAZ-5309RR) since around 2010, including the Silk Road Rally and, since 2011, the Dakar Rally. It was the second team from the former Soviet Union after the vehicles from KAMAZ . The truck was heavily modified for the racing events and received, among other things, a turbodiesel engine with 850 PS (625 kW), a transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen , axles from Sisu Axles and tires from Michelin . Since the end of 2018 there has been a successor that is optically based on the MAZ-6440 , but technically still based on the chassis of the MAZ-5309.
