In the late 1970s, the manufacturer MAZ decided to start production of a family of trucks based on the western model. On the one hand to meet the civilian demand for heavy semitrailer tractors , on the other hand to create an alternative to the technically outdated 500 series . The official start of production was on May 19, 1981, the first truck of the new vehicle family to be built was a copy of the two-axle version MAZ-5432 .

The new generation vehicles quickly became MAZ's most important product. In April 1983 the thousandth model was produced, and on April 14, 1989, the one millionth truck left the factory with a MAZ-6422. It was not until the mid-1990s that successors for the -6422 and -5432 models were developed, as the old vehicles no longer met the legal requirements for international long-distance traffic, especially with Western Europe. The MAZ-6430 was designed and produced as the successor to the MAZ-6422 . Both models have been produced in parallel in Minsk since 1997.

The GDR imported the MAZ-6422 together with the lighter version MAZ-5432 for use in long-distance traffic from 1985.

Model variants

In the course of the now more than 30-year production history, there have been different model variants of the MAZ-6422, identified by adding additional numbers. However, the external design of today's vehicles is still almost the same as when production started in 1981. The main difference lies in the engine and the equipment in the driver's cab. The only exception to this is the MAZ-64227, which stands out from the rest of the generations with a facelift. The list does not claim to be complete, as variations have often been made within the models listed.

  • MAZ-6422: Variant introduced in 1981, the date that production was discontinued is unclear, but is no longer in production today
  • MAZ-64221: Introduced in 1989 and produced until today, it has a JaMZ-8421.10 eight-cylinder diesel engine with 17.24 l displacement and 265 kW output
  • MAZ-64224: Also introduced in 1989 and built to this day, has a JaMZ-8424.10 eight-cylinder diesel engine with 312 kW
  • MAZ-64226: Model with MAN-D2866-LF15 diesel engine (11.97 l displacement and 272 kW output), the only model with an engine purchased from Western Europe
  • MAZ-64227: Renewed design of the cab, probably no longer built today
  • MAZ-64229: Introduced in 1987 and produced to this day, JaMZ-238D eight-cylinder diesel engine with 14.76 l displacement and an output of 243 kW
  • MAZ-6422A5: Current model with a Russian diesel engine and 243 kW output
  • MAZ-6422A8: Current model with JaMZ-6581.10 diesel engine and 294 kW output
