The MAZ-104 ( Russian МАЗ-104 , German transcription actually MAS-104) is a bus model from the Belarusian vehicle manufacturer Minski Avtomobilny Sawod , which was mass-produced from 1996 to 2006. It is an inexpensive version of the similar MAZ-103 .

history

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the vehicle manufacturer MAZ quickly established relationships with western companies in order to manufacture products for the Eastern European market that could be competitive with the imported vehicles. As early as 1992, in cooperation with Neoplan, the MAZ-101 Neoplan model was launched, which was technically and optically based on the Neoplan N4014NF low-floor model.

However, the model sold so poorly in the coming years that production was discontinued around 1997. The main reason was that the price at $ 200,000 was in a range that was far too high. Instead, the successor MAZ-103 was presented in 1996 , which was offered for only 40% of the original price of the MAZ-101. Since the main components were still installed by Western manufacturers, the buses suddenly became interesting for a significantly wider group of customers. Sales increased significantly and production continues to this day (2014).

In order to expand the customer base again, the MAZ-104 was introduced almost simultaneously with the MAZ-103. This model uses the same structure and can hardly be distinguished from the MAZ-103. The main difference is that many technical components, such as the engines, were obtained from Russian manufacturers at significantly lower prices. As a result, the new price of the vehicles could be reduced by about 10,000 US dollars compared to the MAZ-103. The strategy worked, over the 10 years of construction, around 1,500 copies of the basic version alone, which were or are in use in local transport in some Russian cities, but also in Minsk , for example, were sold. In service he is now (2014), among others, still in Russian Khanty-Mansiysk .

Model variants

Below are the different model variants that were produced. Often there are only a few copies that were given their own model number because minor technical changes were made compared to the basic version.

description

Like the MAZ-103, the MAZ-104 is designed as a typical low-floor bus for city and suburban traffic. This can be seen from the fact that the vehicle has only a few seats of around 25 seats, but can also carry up to 100 passengers in standing room. This corresponds to about eight people per square meter of floor space. Three passenger doors are built in to make it easier to get on and off, and they can be opened and closed using a compressed air system. In the event of danger, the compressed air can be released from the system via a valve via an emergency switch in the passenger compartment and the doors can then simply be pushed open by hand.

The bus is powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine. A JaMZ-236 engine with a displacement of 11.15 liters was installed in the absolute majority of vehicles . In the course of the construction period, several different variants of this engine were installed, whereby the performance varied slightly. However, some vehicles also have an MMZ-D-260.5 engine. In all variants, the drive force is transmitted to the rear axle.

The air brake system of the bus acts equally on the front and rear axles. The parking brake is designed as a replacement system. An anti-lock braking system (ABS for short) was installed in series, a traction control system (ASR) could be ordered as an option.
