The MAZ-205 ( Russian МАЗ-205 , German transcription actually MAS-205) is a Belarusian low-floor articulated bus from the Minsky Avtomobilny Sawod. The vehicle is an articulated train bus with a powered central axle and according to a drive formula of 6 × 2 (2). It was supposed to replace the older MAZ-105 , since 2014 there has been a revised successor with the MAZ-215 .

MAZ-205 is the only vehicle designation of the manufacturer that has been awarded twice. In the 1950s and 1960s, a MAZ-205 truck was built in large-scale production, but it has neither technical nor historical features in common with the bus.

The desire to meet all ecological requirements for manufacturers in Russian and foreign markets prompted the Minsk developers to improve the environmental standards of their buses. For the Russian market, the MAZ-205 is supplied with a Mercedes-Benz -OM-926LA engine with 240 kW, which corresponds to the Euro-4 standard. For foreign markets, the MAZ-205 069 model is equipped with an OM 906LA engine with 210 kW in accordance with the Euro 5 standard. Such engines accelerate a bus almost 19 meters long (by the way, the longest in the model range of the Minsk Automobile Plant) to 75 to 96 km / h.

The MAZ-205 has an engine compartment in the front part of the bus. This layout allows for the use of a much simpler and cheaper hinge unit that is made in-house. This reduces the production costs of the vehicle and improves the driving characteristics in wintry road conditions. In practice, this design prevents the vehicle from slipping and buckling on ice and snow. The engine compartment had to be enlarged to accommodate all of the systems required for the EURO 5 environmental standard. The bus uses automatic transmissions that can be supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen or Voith , depending on the customer's requirements . The suspension of the front axle and the rear axle is pneumatic, the body can be lowered for easier entry and exit. The braking system is pneumatic, dual-circuit, equipped with disc brakes on all wheels as well as ABS and ASR systems.

An improvement over MAZ-105 is the height of the bus floor compared to street level. This has been reduced from 345 mm in the MAZ-105 to 270 mm in the MAZ-205.

During the welding phase in production, corrosion inhibitors are introduced into the cavities to protect the interior of the chassis. For this reason, the manufacturer states that the vehicle has been protected against corrosion for at least nine years .

The driver's cab is equipped with a separate glass door with special windows to enable operation with a conductor who, for example, sells tickets. The MAZ-205 can be equipped with either imported or in-house seats. Some seats reserved for older passengers have armrests. Depending on the model, there are 35-39 seats available and the total passenger capacity is 175 people. However, practice shows that up to 190 people can fit on the bus. The second door is equipped with a manual ramp for the disabled. However, the motor is located where the usual wheelchair space is, opposite the second door. When entering, a person in a wheelchair has to perform a somewhat difficult maneuver to get from the door to the wheelchair space that is on the same side of the bus as the doors and in front of the second door. The bus can be equipped with various additional equipment, e.g. B. Screens for information about the bus route, voice announcements from the bus stop, vacuum fire extinguishing system, etc.

In contrast to the predecessor MAZ-105 and the successor MAZ-215 , only very few vehicles were produced by the MAZ-205. Eight copies were built between 2009 and 2013. The first two buses were initially tested in Minsk and were delivered to Poland in 2010 and 2011, along with two other buses . A vehicle burned out there in early 2015. The last four vehicles were delivered to Tyumen in 2013 . No new orders have been announced since then. Nevertheless, the manufacturer still offers the MAZ-205 (as of 2020) for sale.
