The 500 series is the successor to the 200 series . Prototypes were manufactured from 1958, and series production began in small numbers in 1963. Due to delivery problems in the area of the engines, there were delays, so that it was not until 1965 that production could be completely converted to the new 500 series. The trucks with the 4 × 2 drive formula had a modern sheet steel cab and a maximum payload of seven and a half tons.

In 1970 the 500 series was revised, the new versions were identified by adding the letter A to the original numbers. The main changes to the MAZ-500A compared to the MAZ-500 model were an increase in the payload by 500 kg to eight tons and an extension of the wheelbase by 100 mm. Export versions achieved a payload of nine tons. In addition, the top speed was increased to 85 km / h. The successor, MAZ-5335, completely replaced the MAZ-500A in 1977 and was produced until 1990.

Model versions

The MAZ-500 was the structural basis for a whole series of trucks, which differed in particular in their superstructures. The type designations MAZ-501 , MAZ-502 and MAZ-506 (two-way tipper based on the MAZ-200) had already been assigned in the previous generation around the MAZ-200 .

Series vehicles

  • MAZ-500 - Flatbed truck (basic model)
  • MAZ-500W - The vehicle was built for the Soviet Army with a flatbed made entirely of steel and folding seats for the transport of soldiers. Either equipment or personnel could be transported. Series production took place in small numbers.
  • MAZ-500G - extended wheelbase model. The number of pieces produced remained small.
  • MAZ-500S - see MAZ-512
  • MAZ-500Sch - Chassis without superstructures were delivered ex works under this designation. At other companies, the trucks were then fitted with special structures such as mobile cranes, concrete mixers or tank structures.
  • MAZ-500Ju - see MAZ-513
  • MAZ-503 - dump truck
  • MAZ-504 - tractor unit
  • MAZ-509 - wood transporter with four-wheel drive .
  • MAZ-512 - like MAZ-500, but already equipped with double glazing and similar modifications ex works, especially for use in cold regions
  • MAZ-513 - for tropical areas of application
  • MAZ-514 - three-axis, drive formula (6 × 4)
  • MAZ-515 - Three-axle tractor, drive formula (6 × 4)
  • MAZ-516 - three-axle vehicle, built 1969–1973. Designated as MAZ-516A from 1973 to 1977. With drive formula (6 × 2), the rear axle is designed as a lifting axle .

Prototypes

  • MAZ-505 - As early as 1962, a prototype of an all-wheel drive version was built under the designation MAZ-505, which was designed for military purposes, but never went into series. The vehicle was intended as a successor to the MAZ-502 .
  • MAZ-508 - Also MAZ-508W, four-wheel drive tractor. A prototype was built in 1962. Not manufactured in series.
  • MAZ-510 - construction tipper with halved driver's cab and only one seat for the driver. A separate engine compartment was designed on the passenger side. Not manufactured in series.
  • MAZ-511 - prototype of a two-way tipper, which should be used together with the matching trailer of the type MAZ-847. Built in 1962, there was never any series production. In 1970 a revised prototype MAZ-511A was built, which also remained a one-off.
  • MAZ-520 - three-axle tractor, only a prototype made. An additional axle was attached to the front in order to reduce the axle loads, especially in poor road conditions. The construction turned out to be a failure, as the main load was still on the rear axle.

Technical specifications

The MAZ-500 is a forward control truck with a tilting cab. This was new for trucks from Comecon countries. The vehicles of the 500 series were equipped with V6 diesel engines from the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod of the JaMZ-236 type. This produced 180 hp (132 kW) as standard with a displacement of 11.15 liters. The consumption was 23 l / 100 km and the top speed was 75 km / h. The fuel tank held 200 liters of diesel. A manual gearbox with five forward gears and one reverse gear transmitted the drive power to the rear axle. The tractor units were equipped with JaMZ-238 V8 diesel engines with direct injection and an output of 240 hp (176 kW).

The following data apply to the MAZ-500A as it was manufactured for export. These machines differed in particular in that a payload of up to nine tons was achieved.

  • Engine: six cylinder four-stroke diesel engine
  • Engine type: JaMZ-236
  • Power: 180 hp (132 kW) at 2,100 min -1
