Sprockhoff no. 919

The large stone graves near Nahne were three grave systems of the Neolithic funnel cup culture in the Osnabrück district of Nahne ( Lower Saxony ), of which only one still exists today. It bears the Sprockhoff number 919.

location

The preserved grave is located in a small, tree-lined area east of the Alte Bauernschaft street and south of the Osnabrück zoo parking lot . The second grave was about 200 m northwest of it. At this point there is now a sports field. About 2 km to the northeast, in the area of today's street Am Huxmühlenbach, there is said to have been a third grave, which was called "Schlufstein" and was destroyed in 1837.

description

The preserved grave 1

The complex has an almost completely destroyed east-west oriented burial chamber. It is 26 m long and 1.5 m wide. Only a few wall stones are still in situ , others have overturned. The locations of other stones can still be seen as pits. The very poor state of preservation today is probably due to the fact that many of the stones from the grave were used as building material for a neighboring war memorial for the fallen of the First World War .

The destroyed grave 2

A second grave was mentioned in 1841 by Johann Karl Wächter , but not described in detail. In the further course of the 19th century it was largely destroyed. Its remains were rediscovered in 1971 when a sports field was expanded. Subsequent excavations by Hans-Günter Peters promoted deep stab ceramics , fragments of collared cylinders , five flint s tools and a chert -Beil to light. Some of the stones from this grave were used as building material for a replica of a large stone grave built in the Osnabrück Zoo.
