The truck MAZ-504 ( Russian МАЗ-504 ) is a tractor of the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsk Automobile Plant . Technically, the vehicle is based on the MAZ-500 , the flatbed version of the truck. With the MAZ-515 there was also a three-axle version of the MAZ-504, which, however, was extremely rare.
description

As early as 1962, prototypes for a new family of trucks were manufactured at MAZ, which were to replace the MAZ-200 , which had been in the program for almost two decades . Due to delivery problems in the area of engines, series production was not started until 1965. In this year a successor to the MAZ-200W tractor unit was introduced, the MAZ-504. It had a JaMZ 236 V6 diesel engine with 180 hp (132 kW) and a displacement of 11.15 liters. The trucks were often used together with single-axle trailers such as the MAZ-5245. Although the trucks with their relatively powerful engines and low curb weight had good performance characteristics, the vibrations in the cab and the noise level were bothersome. In addition to the modified structure, the vehicle differed from the basic version with a flatbed in that the wheelbase was shortened by 650 millimeters.
In the course of a major revision of the vehicle family, the MAZ-504A was created, which was built in series from 1970. From this point on there was also a version for long-distance transport with a large-volume and more powerful JaMZ 238 V8 diesel engine. In addition, the working conditions for the driver have been improved by improving the sound insulation and reducing vibrations. Visually, the vehicles of the new generation differed from the old by a modified radiator grille in which the vertical struts have been replaced by rectangles. The wheelbase of the new vehicles has been extended by 200 millimeters. A frequently used trailer was the MAZ-5205. Production ended in 1977 and the successor was the MAZ-5429 , which was based on the MAZ-5335 .
The MAZ-504 was exported to various countries, including the German Democratic Republic . There it was used for civilian purposes, but not with MAZ trailers due to axle problems.

Model variants
- MAZ-504 - The basic model built in series from 1965 to 1970.
- MAZ-504B - A tractor based on the MAZ-504 with hydraulic system for special semi-trailers.
- MAZ-504A - The version improved from 1970 to 1977 with a new driver's cab and a wheelbase extended by 200 millimeters.
- MAZ-504W - Sometimes referred to as MAZ-504V, a version based on the MAZ-504A for international traffic with a JaMZ-238 V8 diesel engine. The tractor was the most powerful version of the MAZ-504 with 240 hp.
- MAZ-508W - An all-wheel-drive version of the MAZ-504 with a greatly extended wheelbase, developed in 1962 together with the first prototypes. However, the vehicle never went into series production.
- MAZ-520 - Prototype based on the MAZ-504 with two steerable front axles. There were difficulties with the axle loads of the MAZ-504, especially with heavy trailers. Therefore, an attempt was made to distribute the load over several axles for poor road conditions. The project was a failure, as the main load, as to be expected with a tractor unit, was still on the rear axle.
