The MAZ-509 ( Russian МАЗ-509 , German transcription actually MAS-509) is a Soviet truck from the production of the Minsky Avtomobilny Sawods . The heavy two-axle truck is a variant of the MAZ-500 developed for forestry and was built in series from 1966. It is the successor to the MAZ-501 and at the same time the only production vehicle in the MAZ-500 series that has all-wheel drive . The truck was produced in Minsk for almost 25 years and was only replaced by the MAZ-5434 in 1990 .

Vehicle history

The development of the MAZ-509 began in 1962. Since the series around the MAZ-200 was to be replaced by the more modern MAZ-500, a successor had to be developed for the timber transporter MAZ-501. The MAZ-500 as the basic model of the new series was manufactured from 1963 in small numbers and from 1965 at full capacity. The first production version of the MAZ-509, the MAZ-509P, went into production on April 6, 1966. Compared to the MAZ-200, the most important innovations were the four-stroke V6 diesel engine with 11.15 liters displacement and the design as a front control . The MAZ-501 was still designed in hood handlebar design and equipped with a four-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine. Like the MAZ-501, the truck was delivered with two-axle trailers for transporting logs.

In 1969 and 1970 the MAZ-500 was revised. The changes were also adopted for the MAZ-509, from then on the P was used in the type designation. The payload increased by 500 kg and the wheelbase of the truck was increased by 10 cm. The gear ratios of the gearbox and the transfer case were adjusted, increasing the top speed from 60 to 65 km / h. The front axle has also been revised. The outer planetary gear of the MAZ-509P was omitted completely and the complete reduction was realized via the differential gear of the front axle. The clutch has also been revised. Visually, only the structure of the radiator grille changed. In 1973 the vehicle was awarded the USSR seal of approval .

The model was last revised in 1978. The changes that were made to the base model when switching from the MAZ-500A to the MAZ-5335 were also adopted for the timber transporter. From then on the vehicle was called MAZ-509A. It is unknown why no four-digit number was assigned in accordance with the applicable standard . The reason for the revisions was that they wanted to meet new international standards so that the machines could continue to be exported. In particular, the arrangement of the headlights was revised and the radiator grille was also changed. The vehicle was produced until 1990 and then replaced by the MAZ-5434 , which is still being built today.

Due to its age of at least 30 years and the harsh operating conditions, the MAZ-509 is rarely found today, but trucks of this type are still in use.

The MAZ-509 was also imported from the GDR and was used particularly in poor and mountainous road conditions. From 1970, the trucks came into the country together with matching Soviet TMZ-803 trailers. The superstructures at VEB Forsttechnik Oberlichtenau were partially replaced by other types such as the FA.4 forestry superstructure. From 1977 onwards, domestic HN 80.58 trailers were also used. Both trailers could be saddled up when driving empty. The gross vehicle weight of the train was 21 tons.

Model variants

The MAZ-509 was built in three different versions over the course of the production period. There are also a few prototypes that used the same chassis.

  • MAZ-509P - The first version of the truck was developed from 1962 and mass-produced from 1966 to 1969. The vehicles can be recognized optically by the radiator grille with the vertical struts (see adjacent pictures).
  • MAZ-509 - Version built from 1970 to 1977. The payload increased by 500 kg and the wheelbase was extended by 100 mm. These changes correspond to the transition from the MAZ-500 to the MAZ-500A in the basic model. As with the basic version, a revised grille with large rectangular structures was installed. The term is also used generally for all model versions if the variants are not differentiated more precisely.
  • MAZ-509A - Version produced from 1978 to 1990. It is based on the revised MAZ-5335 . The indicators were moved to the spot where the headlights were, and the radiator grille was replaced by another model, this time with a finer rectangular structure. The headlights were integrated into the bumper.
  • MAZ-505 - The prototype of a military all-wheel drive truck was intended to be the successor to the MAZ-502 and uses the same technology as the MAZ-509P. In 1962 a copy was built that ultimately never went into series production. Unlike the MAZ-509, the truck had large-volume balloon tires.
  • MAZ-509B - All-wheel drive version of the rear tipper MAZ-503 with short wheelbase never built in series .
  • MAZ-508W - All-wheel drive tractor unit built as a prototype in 1962. Ultimately, only the similar MAZ-504 was produced without all-wheel drive.
