The MZKT-79221 ( Russian МЗКТ-79221 ) was first developed as a heavy all-wheel-drive truck (16 × 16) from the late 1980s to the 1990s by the Belarusian manufacturer Minski Avtomobilny Sawod and serves as the chassis of the mobile intercontinental missile system RS-12M2 Topol-M and RS-24 "Jars" . Production later went to Minski Zavod Koljosnych Tjagachei , and series production began in 1995. It is the successor to the MAZ-7917 .
Vehicle history
The development of the MZKT-79221 goes back to an instruction of the Council of Ministers of the USSR from February 1987. The project to create a heavy mobile rocket launch pad was code-named Albatros . The order for production went to the Minski Avtomobilny Zavod in 1989 .
Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union , the project continued. In 1990 MAZ presented a first prototype with a diesel engine under the name MAZ-7922 . In addition, the prototype MAZ-7923 was created with the gas turbine from the T-80 as a drive . In 1992 the project went to the newly founded Minski Zavod Koljosnych Tjagatschei, so the vehicle was renamed MZKT-7922. Three more prototypes were made by 1994. A year later, the first two series vehicles were built.
Of the eight axles, the front three and the rear three axles are steerable. As a result, the turning circle is 36 to 40 meters, which is relatively low for this vehicle size.
