The truck MAZ-503 ( Russian МАЗ-503 , German transcription actually MAS-503) is a type of truck from the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minski Avtomobilny Sawod , which was built in series from 1965. The vehicle is the tipper version of the MAZ-500 .

As early as 1958, MAZ was producing prototypes of a new vehicle family that was supposed to replace the MAZ-200 . Series production was initially not carried out, in particular due to delivery problems with the engines. In 1963 the new truck family began to be produced in small numbers around the MAZ-500 alongside the MAZ-200. It was not until 1965 that production of the predecessor could be completely stopped.

Following the tradition in Soviet truck construction, the tipper was given its own type number, although technically apart from the structure it hardly differs from the basic model with a flatbed. The only significant change was a reduction in the wheelbase, which was only 3200 millimeters in the first versions.

In 1970 the truck family and thus also the MAZ-503 were revised. The new version was named MAZ-503A. Changes to the original model were a visually slightly redesigned driver's cab (the headlights were integrated into the bumper), an extension of the wheelbase by 200 millimeters and an increase in the payload from seven to eight tons. The modifications also increased the curb weight of the vehicle by 500 kilograms.

In 1977 the production of the truck ended in favor of the successor MAZ-5549 , which is technically based on the MAZ-5335 . The visually similar vehicle was produced until around 1990.

Model variants

  • MAZ-503 - from 1965 in series produced basic model with low tipping body and without tailgate
  • MAZ-503B - model with tailgate and higher side walls
  • MAZ-503W and MAZ-503G - further versions with minor changes to the structure
  • MAZ-503A - revised version from 1970
  • MAZ-503S - model for use in northern (very cold) regions
  • MAZ-509B - Prototype of an all-wheel drive variant of the MAZ-503B, which, however, never went into production. Later, with the MAZ-509, a timber transporter was created that was based on the longer chassis of the flatbed truck and had all-wheel drive.
  • MAZ-510 - prototype of a tipper with a single-seat cabin, which took up only half the width of the vehicle. The vehicle did not go into series production.
