The MAZ-543 ( Russian МАЗ-543 ) is a heavy four-axle truck (8 × 8) from the Belarusian vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Sawod , which was developed in the 1960s. This truck is used almost exclusively as a military vehicle.

history

The first prototypes of the MAZ-543 were made in 1962, series production began in 1965 and on November 7, 1965, specimens were first spotted in public at a military parade on Red Square as part of the SS-1C Scud-B missile complex (9K72 Elbrus). The commissioning took place only in 1966. The chassis of the MAZ-543 was designed by the Russian designer Boris Ljwowitsch Schaposchnik. The MAZ-543 model was originally designed for the transport of medium and long-range missiles. To reduce the overall length of the vehicle, the warhead was positioned between the two cabs, which was probably the most distinctive feature of the vehicle. There is space for two people in each driver's cab. While the MAZ-543 has become rare, some of the earlier developed MAZ-537 are still in use.

There are various versions and further developments of the MAZ-543, including the MAZ-547 , which is an extended version with more powerful engines of the MAZ-543. This vehicle is best known as the rocket launch and transport vehicle for Soviet SS-20 medium-range missiles from the 1980s. The MAZ-543M was manufactured at MZKT until December 2000 . All variants of the MAZ-543 were equipped with a V12 4-stroke diesel engine of the type D12А -525 with an output of 525 hp at 2300 min −1 . It is a high-speed diesel engine with direct injection and a displacement of 38.8 liters. The mass of the engine is 1.45 tons. The compression ratio is 1: 14–15.

The modernized vehicle variant MZKT-7930 "Astrolog" (Russian: МЗКТ-7930 Астролог), which is produced by the Minsk vehicle manufacturer MZKT, has existed since 1994 . Probably the most striking difference is that the truck now has a continuous cab. In addition, the Astrolog is equipped with a V12 JaMZ- 846 engine that delivers 500 hp (368 kW) and can accelerate the vehicle to 70 km / h. The fuel supply is 1000 liters of diesel. The loading capacity has been increased to 24 tons, the curb weight is 20 tons. It was not until December 14, 2000 that the Minsk plant was completely converted to production of the "Astrolog". The production of the MAZ-543 has come to an end.

Executions

Based on the MAZ-543, special vehicles for military and civil purposes have been and are being built for decades. The following list is not exhaustive.

SS-1 launch platform (SCUD-B) based on the MAZ-543 (1985)
  • MAZ-543 : The chassis with a long wheelbase was the basic model and was developed from 1962 and in series production from 1965.
  • MAZ-543А : This variant was developed in 1967. The loading capacity could be increased to 22,000 kg. Several civil versions were produced on the basis of the MAZ-543A, for example the airport fire fighting vehicles AA-60 (543) -160 (from 1973) and AA-70 (543) -172 and the mobile crane KS-5571.
  • MAZ-543B : Chassis for rocket launch ramps built from the late 1960s. Minor updates to the MAZ-543 and MAZ-543A models.
  • MAZ-543W : Experimental version , from 1972 to 1974 a total of 233 units were built, but the army did not take them over. However, the vehicle served as the basis for the development of the MAZ-543M and was already built according to its concept: Only one driver's cab (left) and the engine compartment instead of the second cabin.
  • MAZ-543D : Chassis with multi-fuel engine .
  • MAZ-543М : The MAZ-543M appeared at the beginning of the 1970s, which is clearly different from the other versions in terms of appearance. The right-hand driver's cab is missing and the engine was placed in its place. The MAZ-543M is mainly used in the military sector as a chassis for radar antennas, guns or as a rocket launch vehicle.
  • MAZ-543P : This version was developed in 1966 for the TR-1 Temp ballistic surface-to-surface missile . The main difference is that the vehicle now had a loading capacity of 19,400 kg.
  • MAZ-543T : Special version for mountainous and tropical areas. However, a production did not come about.

In accordance with the standard for naming Soviet motor vehicles that has been in force since 1966 , trucks were given four-digit names from the 1970s:

  • MAZ-7310 “Uragan” : First presented in 1974 in the All-Russian Exhibition Center . Series production began in 1976. Civil vehicles such as the airport fire fighting vehicle AA-60 (7310) -160.01 from 1978 and the mobile crane KS-5573 from 1982 are based on the Uragan. The vehicle is used, among other things, in the development of oil fields in Siberia.
Big Bird Radar of the S-300PMU2 based on the MAZ-74106 (2005)
  • MAZ-7313 / MAZ-73131 : Released in 1983; Increase in loading capacity by one ton. The airport fire fighting vehicle AA-60 (7313) -160.01 and the mobile cranes KS-5576 and KS-6571 are also based on these models.
  • MAZ-7410 : The variant built in the mid-1970s is a tractor unit with a shorter wheelbase. The distances between axes 2 and 3 and between 3 and 4 have been shortened.
  • MAZ-74106 : This tractor unit is mainly used to transport the  64N6 BIG BIRD search radar of the S-300PM anti-aircraft missile system.
  • MAZ-7510 : variant as a tipper, also used civilly.
  • MAZ-7910 : The MAZ-7910 variant based on the MAZ-543M has been delivered since 1973. The vehicle was able to transport pipeline pipes up to 12 m in length and up to 18 t. With a trailer, the loading capacity reached 38 tons. The vehicle is also used as a transport and launch vehicle for S-300 series air defense complexes . The length of the MAZ-7910 is 11,450 mm, the width 3,050 mm and the height 3,550 mm.
  • MAZ-7911 : The first prototype was built in 1973, a small series from 1975 to 1979. The vehicle is a modernized version of the original MAZ-543 with two cabs. The chassis, also known as Oplot-A , was also equipped with a flatbed and suitable trailer for transport tasks.
MZKT-7930 Astrolog as a mobile launch pad for the Iskander missile complex (2011)
  • MAZ-79111 : Modernized MAZ-543M with a reinforced rear axle, later other changes were made, e.g. a. a new engine was used. The first prototypes were made in 1974, and series production in small numbers ran from 1975 to the mid-1980s. The vehicle served under the designation Oplot-B as a carrier for the multiple rocket launcher system BM-30 . In place of the right cabin, the engine was accommodated, as in the MAZ-543M.
  • MAZ-79112 : Like MAZ-7911, but with a shortened wheelbase. A prototype was built in 1977, nothing is known about series production.
  • MZKT-7930 "Astrolog" : Fundamentally modernized successor version of the MAZ-543. The driver's cab was redesigned, the characteristic central division no longer exists, the engine has been improved, so a JaMZ-846 with 500 HP or optionally a Deutz diesel engine is now installed. This version is mainly used by the military, for example as a mobile launch pad for the Iskander missile complex , as a heavy bridge-laying vehicle TMM-6 , as a radar vehicle 96L6 for the S-400 system or as a chassis for the 96K6 Panzir air defense system .

Replicas of the vehicle were also made abroad:

  • WS2400 : Chinese copy of the MAZ-543 from the 1980s.
