The Vdnkh (VDNKh, Russian ВДНХ - Выставка достижений народного хозяйства ; 1992-2014 Russian Exhibition Center ) is located in Moscow on Prospekt Mira , near the exhibition grounds, named after the metro station VDNKh .

Show of performance of the USSR

The site with a series of thematic pavilions was laid out in 1923 as the All-Russian Agricultural Exhibition (1939 All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (WSChW) ) and was initially in operation until 1941. The exhibition was closed during the Second World War and was able to reopen on August 1, 1954 with reconstructed and newly built pavilions.

For the 1959 season, the Agricultural Exhibition on the Extended Territory was included in the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements of the USSR (VDNKh, Russian Выставка достижений народного хозяйства СССР). It was intended as a showcase of the achievements of socialism and was considered a showpiece in the Soviet Union that demonstrated the efficiency of the Soviet planned economy .

In around one hundred pavilions, some of which were lavishly designed, there were exhibits from various regions and countries, but also from various areas of the economy . The space travel pavilion gained particular fame . Copies of the Sputnik satellite, training equipment to prepare the cosmonauts , space suits and parts of the Soyuz rockets could be viewed here.

After perestroika

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the pavilions were cleared out and rented out as market space - for a long time , VDNKh was primarily used by Muscovites to buy consumer electronics. It was converted into an Open Joint Stock Company (OAO) and in 1992 was named All-Russian Exhibition Center (WWZ, Russian ВВЦ - Всероссийский выставочный центр). However, the VDNKh metro station has not been renamed.

From 2005 the WWZ was expanded as an exhibition center. It hosted trade and consumer fairs, u. a. the Internationale Handwerksmesse (2006) in German cooperation. The site continued to be used as a recreation park and for cultural, amusement and sporting events. It attracts around 20 million visitors annually.

The following are also located on the exhibition site or in its immediate vicinity:

At the beginning of 2014, the city of Moscow took over all shares in OAO WWZ. At the suggestion of the Moscow Mayor , an online poll was held, in which more than 90% of the participating Muscovites voted for a return to the previous name. The exhibition site was renamed VDNKh on May 14, 2014. At the end of July 2014, the Nikolai Zizin Botanical Garden and the Ostankino Park at the Ostankino TV tower were incorporated into the VDNKh complex. The renovation of the country pavilions is to take place with the participation of the now independent states. Many of the pavilions were built from wood only for summer operation and without heating and required extensive restoration.
