layout
The memorial shows a rising rocket taking off with its exhaust and contrails. The monument is 110 m high, it has a 77 ° incline and is coated with titanium plates .
It is located in the northeast of Moscow city center (Prospect Mira, 111; Metro: VDNKh ), near the main entrance to the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh), at the end of Cosmonaut Alley .
In March 1958, a few months after the launch of the first artificial satellite , a competition was held for the best project of the obelisk. The sculptor Andrei Petrowitsch Faidysch-Krandijewski (1920–1967) and the architects Alexander Nikolajewitsch Kolchin and Michail Ossipowitsch Barschtsch were selected from more than 350 project proposals . The grand opening of the monument took place on October 4, 1964, the seventh anniversary of the launch of the first satellite.
A Russian poem by Nikolai Gribachev (1910–1992) at the foot of the monument reads:
"И наши тем награждены усилья,
Что поборов бесправие и тьму,
Мы отковали пламенные крылья
- Своей
- Стране
- И веку своему! "
Approximate translation: "And the reward for our efforts after defeating oppression and darkness was that we forged wings of fire for our land and our age."
A cosmonaut museum, opened in 1981, is located at the foot of the monument.
