Asaf "Assi" Dajan , also Assi Dayan , (born November 23, 1945 in Nahalal ; † May 1, 2014 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa ) was an Israeli director, actor, screenwriter and producer. He was one of the most famous filmmakers in Israel.

Life

Asaf Dajan was the youngest son of the Israeli politician and general Moshe Dajan and his wife Ruth Dajan . After serving in a paratrooper battalion, he studied philosophy and English literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Dajan began his acting career in 1967 with a supporting role in the film The Day the Fish Came . His first major role was in Hu Halach B'Sadot that same year . The actor's breakthrough came with the American film A Journey with Love and Death from 1969. In 1970 he was the victim of an attempted plane hijacking in Munich-Riem.

In the Yom Kippur War , Dayan fought as a reservist. Dajan became known to a wider international audience as Raffi Amir in Delta Force and with the action thriller Operation Thunderbolt .

At first, Dajan played heroic soldiers in his films, thereby consolidating the image of the Israeli army in the Israeli public. With his role as a prisoner in Uri Barbash's film Beyond the Walls , this picture began to change from 1984 onwards. He now turned more and more to new roles, such as that of Mickey Baum in The 92 Minutes of Mr Baum . In 2007 he played a widely acclaimed leading role in the film Jellyfish . In the later years, Dajan also devoted himself to television, for example in Israel in a leading role in the series BeTipul , which was later adapted for US television as In Treatment - The Therapist .

Since 1973 Dajan also worked as a film director and made 16 films. His best-known work is the drama Life According to Agfa - Night Shooting , which ran as a competition entry at the 43rd Berlinale in 1993  and received an Honorable Mention. In this film he paints a gloomy picture of Israeli society. According to Haaretz, the film is one of the most important films in Israeli cinema. In 1999 Dajan was a member of the Berlinale jury.

In 2013 Dajan made an autobiographical documentary film with Life as a Rumor . He had his last film appearance in 2011 in Finita la commedia as Ludwig van Beethoven .

Private

Dajan's sister is the politician and writer Jael Dajan , his brother the artist Ehud Dajan. Dajan was married three times and had four children.

In 2009, Dajan was charged with drug possession and assault and was given a one-year suspended sentence.

Awards

Dajan won the Ophir Award for Best Actor for the role of Mickey Baum in The 92 Minutes of Mr Baum . In 1998 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival .
