Beyond the Walls ( Hebrew מאחורי הסורגים, Me'Ahorei Hasoragim , literally "Behind the bars", English film title Beyond the Walls ) is a film by the Israeli director Uri Barbash . The subject is the Israel-Palestine conflict in a prison.

content

A corrupt security chief works as a drug dealer in the maximum security wing of an Israeli prison and stirs up hatred between Jewish and Arab prisoners to his advantage. Uri, imprisoned for 12 years after an armed attack, and Issam, sentenced to 50 years as a Fatah terrorist, are respected as leaders of the Jewish and Arab sides, respectively. After a musical performance in prison, a Jewish inmate dies in a violent argument with a Palestinian. When the security chief blames Issam's cell for the incident, it provokes a fight between the two sides. Doron, the only Jewish inmate in the Arab cell, refuses to sign a document accusing Issam of complicity and commits suicide. In a farewell note, he wrote that his cell was not responsible for the crime. Uri and Issam then go on a hunger strike together.

Reviews

"A powerful and convincing mirror image of the Israeli-Arab conflict with people-reconciling intentions and an admonishing appeal to stop absurd fanaticism and murderous prejudice."
