The European sled dog or Scandinavian Hound is a European dog breed that is not recognized by the FCI .

Origin and history

In the 1950s, people in Scandinavia began to drive sled dog races with Deutsch Kurzhaar and English pointers as well as the Scandinavian Hound (crossbreeding with huskies ). Over time, this type of dog became more and more popular in European races.

The Scandinavian Hound or European sled dog is not a breed in the actual sense, but rather a type of dog that is bred in different lines in functional breeding. In addition to the English Pointer and German Shorthaired Pointer, the breeding components are also some Scandinavian pointing dogs. The slim, long-legged physique and the relatively short hair are striking. It is more like a greyhound than the traditional compact and rather long-haired sled dogs. He is characterized by an irrepressible joy of running and has excellent athleticism. Due to his pronounced social behavior, there are hardly any conflicts even in large groups. He attaches himself strongly to humans, learns easily, and has the desire to please the musher all the time.

Despite its atypical appearance for cold areas, it can cope well with temperatures down to around minus 25 ° C. In strong winds, however, it is customary for the dogs to wear body protection in the form of blankets. With the Yukon Quest or Iditarod , these blankets have also been put on the much thicker hairy Alaskan Huskies for years.
