The heavy truck MAZ-7912 ( Russian МАЗ-7912 ) was developed by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod and used for the transport and as a mobile rocket launch pad of the intercontinental ballistic missile RS-12M Topol (SS-25 Sickle).
vehicle description
Development of the MAZ-7912 began in the 1970s. The vehicle type was designed as a mobile rocket launch pad for the RS-12M Topol ICBM. Essentially, the design was based on the MAZ-547 truck model , which served as a mobile launch pad for the RT-21M (SS-20 Saber) medium-range missile complex . The main difference was that the MAZ-7912 had one more pair of axles, but they weren't powered. The drive formula of the truck is 14 × 12. Each of the seven axles can be steered individually.
The ICBM is located in a rocket launch canister which is 22 meters long and two meters in diameter and is therefore longer than the truck itself. As a result, part of the canister protrudes over the front of the vehicle. In addition, the MAZ-7912 has four hydraulically extendable support beams that are extended before the missile takes off to give the vehicle stability. A total of 100 trucks of this type were built between 1977 and 1985.
From 1984 a successor for the vehicles was built with the MAZ-7917 . The main difference was a new cabin and an extension of the vehicle by about one meter.
