The MAZ-516 ( Russian МАЗ-516 ) is a Soviet truck from the production of the Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod . The three-axle vehicle was initially based on the MAZ-500 and from 1977 on the successor MAZ-5335 .

The MAZ-516 was one of only three three-axle vehicles that were built in series in Minsk in the 1960s and 1970s. With the MAZ-514 there was a similar model with two driven rear axles. The MAZ-515 heavy tractor was based on this type .

The first prototype of the type MAZ-516 was built in January 1966. It was an extended MAZ-500, which was also supplemented by a lifting axle . In this way, the payload could be increased to 16.5 tonnes - more than double the basic model. Series production was initially dispensed with. It was not until January 1969 that the Minsk plant began producing the machines.

The vehicles were initially powered by a six-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine of the JaMZ-236 type. As with the entire vehicle family, the radiator grille is characteristic of the first generation. It consists of vertical metal struts lined up close together. The headlights are embedded in the body next to the grill and there are no side indicators behind the doors.

The basic model MAZ-500 was first revised in 1970. With the MAZ-516, however, they waited until 1973. From this point on, the model rolled off the production line under the name MAZ-516A. As in the basic version, the radiator grille was replaced by another make. It now corresponded to the one on the MAZ-500A and no longer had vertical struts, but larger rectangular subdivisions. In addition, indicators have been added behind the doors at the door handle level. The most important change, however, was that the truck now received a more powerful eight-cylinder diesel engine of the JaMZ-238E type with an output of 265 hp (195 kW).

The MAZ-516A was built in series until 1977. Then there was another switch to the MAZ-516B model. It is no longer based on the MAZ-500, but on the successor MAZ-5335. The radiator grille changed accordingly, now a version with a rectangular structure has been installed, with the individual rectangles becoming significantly smaller. The headlights went into the bumper, and turn signals took their place in the body. In addition, the trucks were equipped with a more powerful JaMZ-238N engine, which developed 300 hp (221 kW). In 1980 the production of the vehicle was stopped. Exact reasons are not known, however, from 1976 onwards, KAMAZ built similar resilient, more modern vehicles in very large numbers.

The production of the three-axle vehicles from Minsk remained very low throughout the entire construction period, unlike the two-axle variants. Overall, only about 1000 to 1500 copies were made of all versions, i.e. the MAZ-514, MAZ-515 and the MAZ-516. In the early 1980s, production of the completely newly developed three-axle MAZ-6422 tractor unit began . In addition, MAZ only built three-axle vehicles again after the collapse of the Soviet Union . The first model with different superstructures was the MAZ-6303 from the beginning of the 1990s .
