The JaMS-238 (Russian: ЯМЗ-238 , other transcriptions: JaMZ-238 and YaMZ-238 ) is a V8 diesel engine with direct injection from the former Soviet and now Russian manufacturer Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod (Russian: Ярославский моторный) заворный. The engine, which has been built since 1961, with both civil and military applications, was used by many vehicle manufacturers in the former Comecon area. Similar engines are the six-cylinder JaMS-236 and the twelve-cylinder JaMS-240 . The successor is the JaMS-530, but the JaMS-238 remains in production.

background

As early as the early 1950s, JaMS was working on a successor to the JaАS-206 engines, which went into series production in 1947, as these engines, which operated according to the two-stroke principle, were considered uneconomical. The JaАS-206 was installed at MAS in Minsk until 1966. The construction of the JaMS-238 is very similar to the Cummins 90 ° V8-265. In 1960 and 1961, the Soviet leadership made attempts to purchase technical equipment for building truck diesel engines for $ 40 million. The JaMS-238 was manufactured from 1961 and was used in the Kirowez K-700 tractor and its successors from 1962 . In addition to the K-700 tractor family, the JaMS-238 was used in various UralAS , KrAS and MAS trucks as well as special vehicles and stationary machines with diesel engine drives .

technology

Cylinder head of the engine from above, some rocker arms have been removed.

The JAMS 238 is an eight-cylinder four-stroke - diesel - V engine with a cylinder bank angle of 90 °. The camshaft is gear-driven, there are two hanging valves per cylinder. The bore is 130 mm, the stroke 140 mm, the total displacement is 14,866 cm 3 . The firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The engine has direct injection, omega-shaped combustion bowls and a conventional in-line injection pump. Some engine models have an exhaust gas turbocharger . There is no charge air cooler. The mass of the engine is around 1200 kg without the gearbox. Originally there were two naturally aspirated models with 158 kW and 176 kW output. They differ in the construction of the intake pipe and in their torque characteristics.

The oil filter of the JaMS-238 should be changed after 120 operating hours on charged engines that are lubricated with Rotamol MD 302. In the case of naturally aspirated engines, it is recommended to change after 170 to 200 operating hours at the latest, even if the requirements for the engine oil are significantly lower in uncharged engines.

Model

There are different types of the JaMS-238 engine, which in Russian are called Модификации , in English "modifications". In the 1960s, there were initially two free-suction models, JaMS-238 (176 kW) for trucks and JaMS-238A (158 kW) for the K-700 tractor , which were supplemented over time by further, also charged models. The list below is not exhaustive.
