KrAZ ( Ukrainian Кременчуцький автомобільний завод , abbreviated КрАЗ, "Kremenchuk Automobile Plant") is a former Soviet , now Ukrainian commercial vehicle manufacturer in the city of Kremenchuk , which is known for its trucks . The main areas of application of the product range are military , but there are also various versions as civil utility vehicles, for example as tippers , tankers and flatbed trucks .

history

In 1945 the decision was made to set up a factory for the manufacture of mechanical parts and bridge elements made of steel . On June 1, 1948, the factory began producing bridge elements. In the mid-1950s, production was switched to agricultural vehicles.

Truck production began in 1959 with the KrAZ-222 taken over by JaAZ . It was a dump truck with ten tons of usable weight. Also in 1959 followed the models KrAZ-214 , KrAZ-219 and KrAZ-221 , which, like the KrAZ-222, had been developed by JaAZ from the various variants of the JaAZ-210 and briefly built in series. The KrAZ-219 was a heavy flatbed truck with a twelve-tonne payload and, like the entire model family, was equipped with a 180 hp (132 kW) six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine. Based on the same chassis, the KrAZ-214 was equipped with all-wheel drive and designed for military use. The KrAZ-221 was the version as a tractor unit without all-wheel drive. The trucks had a fuel consumption of around 60 l / 100 km at a top speed of around 50 km / h. The engine output was increased to 205 hp (151 kW) in 1963.

From 1965 production was switched to the new series around the KrAZ-255 . Production of the KrAZ-260 series began in 1982. By 1984, 500,000 trucks had left the plant and were used throughout Eastern Europe. 1986 was the year in the history of the plant with the highest vehicle output, when 30,655 trucks rolled off the assembly line.

At the beginning of the 1990s, with the introduction of the KrAZ-6510 series for trucks and KrAZ-5444 for the tractor units, an attempt was made to convert the plant to market-economy conditions. In 2004 the plant won a major order for 2,300 trucks to be delivered to Iran. In 2006 the 800,000th vehicle left the factory, an all-terrain tractor of the type KrAZ-6446 . In 2009, the first fifth generation truck - a KrAZ C20.2  - was produced. In 2013, the plant began series production of armored vehicles.

Because of their off-road mobility, KrAZ trucks are often used for military purposes, but are also often used for civilian purposes.

Models

The names of the vehicles are largely based on the current naming systems of Soviet and Russian motor vehicles . The manufacturer deviated from it only in the recent past. The following list does not claim to be complete.
