Vehicle history

The vehicle was originally developed in Yaroslavsky Avtomobilny Sawod in Yaroslavl under the designation JaAZ-219 . Series production began there in 1957 and was just under 2,800 copies in 1959, as the entire truck production, according Kremenchuk relocated to KrAZ. The reason was that it was decided at a political level that from now on only engines and transmissions should be manufactured in Yaroslavl.

In the course of the relocation of production there were hardly any changes to the truck. The cab with the angular radiator grille, which was originally introduced in the JaAZ-214 , was retained. The engine continued to be the inline six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type JaAZ-M206A, which was supplied by the Yaroslavl plant, which was now renamed Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod . As before, pneumatic steering assistance was installed. The only visual change was that the hood ornament (the bear typical of the Yaroslavl vehicles) disappeared and the emblem on the radiator was replaced by that of KrAZ.

The original version of the vehicle was produced until 1964, with 12,780 copies being made. In 1963 the model was revised. The electrical system was converted from 12 to 24 volt operating voltage. The most important change, however, was that a revised JaAZ-M206B engine with 205 HP (151 kW) was used. The result was named KrAZ-219B and was mass-produced until 1965. When a new generation of trucks around the KrAZ-255 was introduced between 1965 and 1967 , the KrAZ-257 was a successor to the model.

The KrAZ-219 was mainly used for civil purposes, but it also came to the Soviet Army . It was used there as a crane truck to reload heavy rockets . In addition, it served as a tanker and was equipped with special military structures where no special off-road mobility was necessary.

V8 four-stroke diesel engines of the JaMZ-238 type , which were used in large numbers in the successor, were already used in small numbers of the vehicle .

Model variants

Like the JaAZ-219, the KrAZ-219 was the basic model of a whole family of vehicles:

In addition, it served as a chassis for a whole range of special bodies:

  • K-104 - In an assembly plant in Odessa , chassis of the KrAZ-219 were equipped with mobile cranes from 1959 . The K-104 was the first model. The crane was powered by diesel and was able to lift 10 tons of load.
  • A version of the K-104 existed as a two-way vehicle .
  • K-122 - 12-ton mobile crane based on the KrAZ-219.
  • K-162 - Modernized mobile crane for loads up to 16 tons.
  • KrAZ-219P - chassis for a mobile gas generator .
  • There are photographs of a single KrAZ-219 that was equipped as a trolley truck.
  • Special superstructures for the oil and gas industry were loaded onto the KrAZ-219.
