The KrAZ-221 ( Ukrainian КрАЗ-221 ) was a heavy three-axle truck made by the Soviet manufacturer KrAZ . It was produced from 1959 to 1966 and then replaced by the optically hardly changed KrAZ-258 . From 1957 to 1959 the vehicle had already been built as JaAZ-221 ( Russian ЯАЗ-221 ) in the Yaroslavsky Avtomobilny Sawod .

Vehicle history

The tractor from a different perspective

The vehicle was originally developed in Yaroslavsky Avtomobilny Zavod (JaAZ for short) in Yaroslavl under the name JaAZ-221. Series production began there in 1957 and, like the entire truck production, was relocated to KrAZ in Kremenchuk in 1959 . The reason was that it was decided at a political level that from now on only engines and transmissions should be manufactured in Yaroslavl. JaAZ, on the other hand, had been producing a very similar tractor unit under the name JaAZ-210D since the early 1950s .

In the course of the relocation of production there were hardly any changes to the truck. The cab with the angular radiator grille, which was originally introduced in the JaAZ-214 , was retained. The engine continued to be the in-line six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type JaAZ-M206A, which was supplied by the Yaroslavl plant, now renamed Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod. As before, pneumatic steering assistance was installed. The only visual change was that the hood ornament (the bear typical of the Yaroslavl vehicles) disappeared and the emblem on the radiator was replaced by that of KrAZ.

Like the other models in the vehicle family, the vehicle was revised in the mid-1960s. The electrical system was converted from 12 to 24 volt operating voltage. The most important change, however, was that a revised JaAZ-M206B engine with 205 HP (151 kW) was used. The result was called the KrAZ-221B and was produced in series until 1966. When a new generation of trucks around the KrAZ-255 was introduced between 1965 and 1967 , there was a successor to the model with the KrAZ-258.

The KrAZ-221 was used both militarily and civilly. In the Soviet Army it was used in conjunction with appropriate trailers as a tanker at airports. The tractor unit was also used as a traction device for the medium-range nuclear missile R-12 .

In addition to the KrAZ-221, there were the technically very similar vehicles KrAZ-214 (with all-wheel drive), KrAZ-219 (with flatbed) and KrAZ-222 (tipper) from the same vehicle family.
