The JaAZ-219 ( Russian ЯАЗ-219 ) was a heavy three-axle truck made by the Soviet manufacturer Jaroslawski Awtomobilny Sawod (Russian Ярославский автомобильный завод, short JaAZ or ЯАЗ). It replaces the JaAZ-210 and was also the last truck developed in Yaroslavl. Just under 2800 copies were made before production was relocated to KrAZ in 1959 . There the truck was built almost identically as the KrAZ-219 until 1965 in large-scale production.

Vehicle history

Little is known about the history of the JaAZ-219. It is clear that the older JaAZ-210 was to be replaced with the design. Series production began in 1957. A major innovation compared to its predecessor was the cabin, which had already been introduced on the JaAZ-214 . The radiator grille was now flat and protected by an additional grille, which also visually distinguishes the vehicles from previous generations. In addition, the engine received a performance increase of 15 hp to 180 hp. At the same time, fuel consumption has been reduced to 55 liters per 100 kilometers. Brakes and heating have been revised, and the shape of the fenders has also changed. In addition, various parts were standardized and the suspension improved.

The production of the predecessor was stopped in 1958. In the same year it was decided at a political level that the Yaroslavl plant should henceforth only produce diesel engines and transmissions. Truck production was then relocated to KrAZ in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1959 , and the name of the vehicle was changed to KrAZ-219 . Initially nothing changed on the vehicles, except for the radiator emblem. The bear figure on the bonnet, the typical identification symbol for trucks from Yaroslavl, was omitted and the lettering underneath was replaced. It was not until 1963 that the vehicle was technically revised at KrAZ. It is not entirely clear whether production in Yaroslavl was stopped in 1959 or not until the second quarter of 1960. It is known that 2769 copies of the JaAZ-219 were made in the two years of production before production was relocated to Kremenchuk .

As with its predecessor, the JaAZ-219 had various body versions that were given their own type numbers for the first time. The JaAZ-221 was a tractor unit, the JaAZ-222 a tipper. Both were later also built in series at KrAZ. On the basis of the JaAZ-219, in addition to flatbed trucks, vehicles with special superstructures such as mobile cranes or tankers were also created .
