The JaG-6 ( Russian ЯГ-6 ) was a truck made by the Soviet manufacturer Jaroslawski Gossudarstwenny Awtomobilny Sawod (later Jaroslawski Awtomobilny Sawod ). It was produced in series from 1936 to 1942, around 8100 copies were built. The vehicle was located above the ZIS-5 . The JaS-3 was a tipper based on the chassis of the JaG-6, of which almost 4800 more units were manufactured.

The JaG-6 was a further development of the JaG-4, which had been produced since 1934. Both vehicles had the same 5.6-liter gasoline engine supplied from Moscow as the lighter ZIS-5 truck . The power was first transferred to a manual four-speed gearbox and then to the rear axle via a two-disc dry clutch. The brake only worked on the rear axle. The JaG-6 was one of the heaviest mass-produced two-axle trucks in the Soviet Union at the time.
In 1938 experiments were carried out with US American supplier engines from the Hercules Engine Company . Large-scale production with these drives was never started.
In the late 1930s there were several attempts to develop a successor to the vehicle. In particular, the much more modern prototype JaG-7 was created in 1939 for a payload of 5000 kg. The prototype JaG-8, which was designed for a payload of 7000 kg, was also built during this period. None of the models ultimately went into series production, although there were fixed plans for the production of the JaG-7 and only in 1942 the Second World War prevented a corresponding conversion of production.
Based on the chassis of the JaG-6, a tipper with a payload of four tons was produced, the JaS-3 ( Russian ЯС-3 ). The "S" stands for "samoswal" (Russian самосвал), which translated simply means tipper . The appearance did not differ from the predecessor JaS-1, which, however, was based on the JaG-4. Between 1936 and 1942, 4765 JaS-3s were manufactured in addition to the JaG-6 platform model.
In 1942, the ZIS plant in Moscow, which supplied the engines for the trucks, had to be evacuated during the fighting during World War II because of the approaching German troops. Accordingly, no more engines were delivered. Truck production was then stopped in Yaroslavl and artillery equipment was instead produced until 1945. Only with the JaAZ-200 was a truck presented again in 1945.
The Red Army used the JaG-6 for their own purposes. As of June 20, 1941, there were 1,600 trucks of this type in their inventory.
In a technology museum in the Moscow area, a tank fire engine with a capacity of 4000 l based on a JaG-6 is on display. It is one of the very few Yaroslavl trucks produced before the war that has survived to this day. In addition, it is the only one that is currently (2017) open to the public.
Model variants
- JaG-6 : Produced from 1936 to 1942, the basic variant with a flatbed. 8075 copies were built.
- JaG-6A : variant built in 1940 with the engine of the ZIS-16 bus . Only 15 copies were made.
- JaG-6M : Version built between 1938 and 1940 with a Hercules YXC-B engine from the Hercules Engine Company. 50 pieces were made.
- JaS-3 : A tipper based on the JaG-6 with a four-tonne payload, manufactured from 1936 to 1942.
- On the basis of the JaG-6, a tank truck with a capacity of 4000 l was produced, which was also used as a fire engine.
