The truck MAZ-205 ( Russian МАЗ-205 , German transcription actually MAS-205) was a type of truck from the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Sawod . It was the tipper version of the MAZ-200 flatbed truck . The vehicle was developed as JaAZ-205 in the Jaroslawski Avtomobilny Sawod , where vehicles were still assembled for about a year until production went to MAZ in 1948.

The JaAZ-200 was developed in the Yaroslavsky Avtomobilny Sawod (JaAZ) as early as the 1940s . The official presentation to the public took place on July 19, 1945 in the Moscow Kremlin . Series production at JaAZ began in August 1947. Around 1,800 automobiles were manufactured there. The following table shows the production figures by year of construction. The JaAZ-200W was designed as a tractor.

JaAZ-200W - - - 52 2 54

* Of these, 99 chassis have already been sent to MAZ for final assembly, 24 with and 75 without a cab.

In the course of the specialization of the Soviet commercial vehicle industry, the Jaroslawski Avtomobilny Sawod handed over the production of the JaAZ-205 to the newly built Minski Awtomobilny Sawod in 1948. The other models in the series did not follow until 1951. MAZ continued to build the trucks without any technical changes. Only the company logo and the radiator grille, now with the typical vertical struts, have been replaced.

description

The MAZ-205 is technically and optically based on the basic model of the series, the MAZ-200. As is customary in Soviet commercial vehicle production, the tipper body still had its own type number. Compared to the standard truck, the wheelbase has been shortened by 720 millimeters and the fuel tank has been made smaller. Although the curb weight of the vehicle was higher than that of the basic version with a flatbed due to the more complex structure, the permissible total weight was lower.

Based on the MAZ-205, the prototype of a tipper was developed in 1954, the loading area of which could not be tilted backwards but to the side. However, the vehicle designated as MAZ-506 did not go into series production. On May 19, 1959, the 100,000th truck left the Minsk plant, a MAZ-205.

With 18 years of construction, the model was produced for an unusually long time. Towards the end of the production period, the basic model MAZ-200 was also available with six-cylinder engines. It is not clear whether these were also installed in the tipper. From 1963 to 1965, the new generation trucks around the MAZ-500 were built in parallel in small numbers . The reason was that the engines for the new vehicles were poorly available. In 1965 the production was finally stopped in favor of the direct successor MAZ-503 .

In use, the trucks proved to be durable; some of them were still in use in the 1980s. A few vehicles have survived to this day. One of them is in a restored condition at the entrance of the MAZ plant in Minsk (see picture on the right).

Like other vehicles from the manufacturer, the MAZ-205 also came to the German Democratic Republic . There it was used for the VEB Talsperrenbau Weimar and for the construction of the Gottleuba dam .
