MAZ is one of the oldest and largest companies in Belarus. As early as June 1944 , the State Defense Committee of the USSR decided to found a commercial vehicle manufacturer in Minsk. The plan was to manufacture hooded vehicles with two and three-axle trucks, as well as two-axle semi-trailers. Finally, in October 1947 , the first five MAZ-205 tippers with a payload of five tons were manufactured, which were produced until the mid-1960s. 1951 began with the production of the flatbed truck MAZ-200 and heavy dump trucks (types MAZ-525 and later also MAZ-530 ). However, this was completely transferred to the Belorussky Avtomobilny Zavod (BelAZ) until 1960 . By 1955, the factory had developed its first in-house development, the MAZ-501, into series production. Towards the end of the 1950s, the MAZ-500, a new front control arm, was developed, which finally succeeded the MAZ-200 in various model variants in 1965. The new model with the 4 × 2 drive formula had a modern sheet steel cabin and a maximum payload of eight tons. In addition, a three-axle vehicle ( MAZ-516 ) with a payload of up to 16 tons was produced from 1969 . In 1970 the 500 series was revised and the new versions were identified by an A after the model numbers. From the end of the 1970s, a new heavy truck model series appeared based on Western European makes. Mention should be made here of the MAZ-5432 long-haul tractor units as a two-axle forward control arm and the MAZ-6422 as a three-axis forward control arm. These trucks are powered by V8 turbo diesel engines from the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod . Both models were further developed under the designation MAZ-54321 and MAZ-64221 and received more powerful engines. They are still produced today with slight modifications.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , MAZ intensified its relations with MAN . There has been a joint venture with MAN since 1997. There are trucks with components from MAN offered under the name MAZ-MAN ( Belarusian МАЗ -MAN). In addition, MAZ trucks are produced in Vietnam and, since July 2004, also in Iran . In October 2013 a contract was signed with the government of Ecuador which provides for the assembly of commercial vehicles from MAZ in the South American country. The main focus is on the production of buses based on the MAZ-4371 and MAZ-5340 truck models for the Ecuadorian market.

Multi-axle heavy trucks are manufactured in Minski Sawod Koljosnych Tjagachei (MZKT), which was spun off as a subsidiary in 1991. The products are sold under the brand name Volat .

Models

MAZ and the branch plants that have been connected since 2009, which together form the BelawtoMAZ , today offer a wide range of products that currently (January 2014) includes over 500 truck models and modifications as well as almost 20 buses. Tractors, dump trucks and other vehicles are also manufactured. The following list of historical and current types, mainly from the original MAZ work, is only intended to provide an overview.
