The truck MAZ-515 ( Russian МАЗ-515 ) is a type of truck produced by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod . The vehicle is technically based on the three-axle MAZ-514 and, like this, belongs to the MAZ-500 vehicle family.

Vehicle history

As early as 1965, MAZ produced the first prototype of a heavy three-axle tractor, which was given the model number MAZ-515. It was based on the MAZ-514, also a prototype of a three-axis version of the MAZ-500. In contrast to the MAZ-514, the MAZ-515 was already equipped with a JaMZ-238 V8 diesel engine with 240 PS (177 kW). Both vehicles did not go into series production, which was due to various technical problems. In particular, the poor availability of sufficiently powerful engines played a role. Only a few copies of the prototype were built for test purposes. It was designed for semi-trailers with a total weight of 25 tons.

Around 1970 the idea was picked up again with another prototype MAZ-515A. The tractor again equipped with a JaMZ-238 diesel engine already received the revised driver's cab of the MAZ-500A. As with the -500A, the wheelbase has been lengthened by 100 millimeters. However, there was still no series production.

From 1973, according to other sources also in 1974, the vehicles were produced in series as the MAZ-515B. An additional diesel tank was installed behind the cabin, and it was now possible to cool the interior of the vehicle using an air conditioning system. In 1977 a fundamental revision followed, as in the entire vehicle family. The cabin now came from the new MAZ-5335 , easy to recognize by the fact that the headlights were integrated into the bumper. A renaming to a four-digit vehicle code was apparently dispensed with. Production ceased in the late 1970s. Overall, only 1000 to 1500 copies of the three-axle types MAZ-514 , MAZ-515 and MAZ-516 were built. The production figures of the tractor remained so low that the successor MAZ-6422 was already in planning from the beginning , which actually went into large-scale production a few years later.

At some point during the short production period, work began on installing a more powerful version of the JaMZ 238 diesel engine with 300 PS (221 kW). When exactly this happened is unclear.

Also in the 1970s there was another experimental version, which among other things had modified headlights. It was named MAZ-515W, but never went into series production.
