The truck MAZ-502 ( Russian МАЗ-502 , German transcription actually MAS-502) is a four-wheel drive truck type (4 × 4) made by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Zavod . The truck, built from 1957 to 1966, belongs to the first generation of commercial vehicles developed in the Soviet Union after the Second World War . It was created on the basis of the MAZ-200 . The MAZ-502 is also referred to as MAS-502 in various sources.
Vehicle history
After the end of the Second World War , the Soviet Army had a great need for all-terrain transport vehicles. During the war, this requirement was largely covered by the Lend Lease Act with US trucks. The trucks produced in the Soviet Union were pre-war developments and technically outdated. The MAZ-502 emerged as a military vehicle from the MAZ-501 , which in turn was based on the MAZ-200. Series production began in Minsk in 1957 and continued there until 1966. The MAZ-502 was the first military vehicle produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant.
Based on the MAZ-500 , the successor of the MAZ-200, built from 1965 , the all-wheel drive MAZ-505 was designed. However, the vehicle never went into series production. The weight class around four tons of payload was taken over by the all-terrain three-axle ZIL-157 and later by the ZIL-131 , lighter loads were transported with the GAZ-66 . MAZ no longer mass-produced two-axle trucks with all-wheel drive for military use until the collapse of the Soviet Union .
The MAZ-502 was not widely used in the Soviet Army. With a total weight of 11,700 kg, the rear axle with single tires was loaded with around 7,500 kg, which restricted the off-road mobility of the vehicle. The top speed of 50 km / h was too low for transport tasks. Nevertheless, the truck was in use until the early 1980s.
The National People's Army also used the MAZ-502. Here it was used from 1964, around fifty pieces were imported.
construction
The MAZ-502 differs from the MAZ-200 mainly in the drive system. The engine used was the JaAZ-M204W (ЯАЗ-М204В), a development of the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant (Ярославский автомобильный завод), which had also developed the MAZ-200. The four-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine with a displacement of 4650 cm³ has an output of 88 kW (120 hp ), and according to other information also up to 99.5 kW (135 hp). Both axles are driven via a manual five-speed gearbox and a transfer case. The front-axle drive cannot be switched off, the truck has a central differential. 50% of the torque is transmitted to both axes. In contrast to the MAZ-200, all wheels have single tires. The brakes are compressed air operated, the power steering also works with compressed air . The MAZ-502 reaches a top speed of 50 km / h. The MAZ-502 has a universal platform for transporting people and loads. All other parts of the vehicle are identical to those of the MAZ-200.
