The MAZ-5551 truck ( Russian МАЗ-5551 , German transcription actually MAS-5551) is a type of truck from the Belarusian vehicle manufacturer Minski Avtomobilny Zavod , which has been in series production since 1985. It is technically based on the model MAZ-5337 .

The MAZ-5551 truck is a modified version of the MAZ-5337, which is now equipped with a tipping body instead of a flatbed. In accordance with the manufacturer's tradition, however, the tipper was given its own model number.

The vehicle has rear-wheel drive and can be operated with trailers with a gross vehicle weight of up to 10 tons. In 2003 a revised version appeared with a more modern driver's cab (easy to distinguish visually). The body supplied by the manufacturer in series is a three-way tipper. The chassis of the MAZ-5551 is also used for special bodies such as sweepers.

Since 2006, the successor MAZ-5550 has been manufactured in two different versions. This is visually similar to the MAZ-5551 and should not be confused.

In its production history, which has now lasted more than 25 years, several different versions of the vehicle have been and are being produced:

  • Basic model MAZ-5551: manufactured from 1988 to 2003
  • Facelift MAZ-5551 (2003): variant delivered with a renewed cabin from 2003 (see picture in info box)
  • MAZ-555101 or MAZ-5551ХЛ (ХЛ for Russian холодно , "cold"): designed for use at temperatures down to −60 ° C
  • MAZ-555147: Version currently supplied by the manufacturer
  • MAZ-5551A2: Version currently supplied by the manufacturer

Remarks

However, since the year of publication 1985 can be found on an official postage stamp from Belarus, it can be assumed that this information is correct. There is an apparent contradiction to the statement that the MAZ-5551 is technically based on the MAZ-5337, but which has only been in series production since 1987. The reason is probably that the technical development of the two very similar models (they differ essentially only in the changed structure) was already completed in 1985, but the MAZ-5337 (as a flatbed model and backbone of the vehicle family) later went into series production.
