The MAZ-5434 ( Russian МАЗ-5434 ) is a truck from the Belarusian manufacturer Minski Awtomobilny Sawod (Russian Минский автомобильный завод, short MAZ or МАЗ). It is manufactured in series since 1990 and is technically based on the MAZ-5432 . Unlike this, the vehicle has all-wheel drive and was originally designed for transporting long timber in forestry .
Vehicle history
The procedure of equipping one's own truck models with all-wheel drive and thus making them especially suitable for forestry has a long tradition in Minski Awtomobilny Sawod. From 1955 there was already a version of the MAZ-200 that had been converted in this way, the MAZ-501 . Later the MAZ-509 was manufactured based on the MAZ-500 . In 1977 the MAZ-509A appeared, which is technically based on the MAZ-5335 . These vehicles were produced until 1990 and replaced by the MAZ-5434 in the same year.
The MAZ-5432, which had been built since 1981, served as the technical basis for the MAZ-5434. In contrast to the tractor unit, the MAZ-5434 received a weaker version of the JaMZ-238 eight-cylinder diesel engine from the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod with initially only 240 PS (176 kW) from a displacement of just under 15 liters. The same engine was also installed in many other Soviet trucks, for example in the KrAZ-255 . The transmission also comes from JaMZ. To date, MAZ does not offer a version of the truck with western drive components, unlike many other models. The engine used as of 2017 is a V6 with a displacement of 11.15 liters and an output of 270 hp (199 kW). In terms of design, it corresponds in many respects to the earlier engine, but fulfills the EURO 4 emissions standard.
While production of the MAZ-5432 was discontinued in 2008, the MAZ-5434 has hardly been changed for almost 30 years. Today MAZ only supplies chassis of this type ex works without a body. Specially for the forestry, appropriately equipped vehicles of the types MAZ-6303 , MAZ-6312 and MAZ-6317 are manufactured in Minsk . Visually, the MAZ-5434 is very similar to the MAZ-5433 without all-wheel drive.
