The MAZ-7904 ( Russo МАЗ-7904 ) is a type of truck the Belarusian vehicle manufacturer Minsk Automobile Plant , a single specimen was built by the 1983rd With a total weight of 360 tons and a length of over 32 meters, it is one of the largest wheeled transport vehicles that was ever developed in the Soviet Union for military purposes.

Vehicle history

The MAZ-7904 was one of several attempts in the mid-1980s to load the railway-based RT-23 intercontinental missile system onto a wheeled vehicle. Various possible carrier vehicles have been developed under the project name Zelina . The problem was that a ready-to-launch missile weighed about 104.5 tons, was 22.6 m long and 2.4 m in diameter. Transport vehicles of this size were not available around 1980. Thus, the MAZ-7904 was used as a carrier vehicle for the 1982 intercontinental ballistic missiles designed. The prototype was built in 1983, the testing in 1984. In the course of the same project, the somewhat smaller MAZ-7907 was also createdwhich, however, was constructed differently. Due to its dimensions, the MAZ-7904 is suitable for transporting two of the missiles.

After the work was completed, the vehicle was tested in Minsk over a distance of almost 500 km, which only happened at night to prevent spy satellites from taking photos of the truck. The prototype of the MAZ-7904 was then dismantled and brought to the Baikonur Cosmodrome for further testing . There he covered another 4,100 km on his own for test purposes and then disappeared from the scene. It was not until the beginning of 2007 that the vehicle, believed to be lost, was rediscovered in a hangar at launch sites 42 and 43.
