The MAZ-532 ( Russian МАЗ-532 ) was a heavy wheeled tractor for forestry produced in the late 1950s by the Soviet manufacturer Minsky Avtomobilny Sawod . It was mainly designed for moving large quantities of timber in difficult terrain.

History

In the mid-1950s, several heavy tractors and dump trucks were developed at MAZ. This development also spawned a forestry tractor that shares technical features with the MAZ-525 and MAZ-530 dump trucks . Experiences and probably also assemblies from the heavy tugs MAZ-528 and MAZ-538 , which also come from this time, were also taken over. The JaAZ-206 diesel engine, for example, was installed in front of the front axle, as was the case with the MAZ-528. The entire system for power transmission and chassis parts came from the MAZ-525, as did the oversized rims and low-pressure tires.

The MAZ-532, which was planned and developed from mid-1956, was presented in 1957 after a short test phase. How many vehicles of this type were ultimately produced is unknown, but this model is unlikely to have become more widespread. Today no surviving specimen is known.

Technical

In order for the vehicle to meet the requirements placed on it, some technical features were necessary. Care was taken to ensure that there was a large ground clearance, which, at around 80 centimeters, is far higher than that of conventional trucks. All-wheel drive and a cable winch were also part of the equipment, as was a diesel engine that was powerful for the time. The short wheelbase of just three meters made the truck reasonably manoeuvrable in the forest despite its size. With an outer diameter of almost 1.80 meters, the oversized low-pressure tires increased traction on the one hand, and on the other hand ensured that the vehicle could easily drive over large obstacles such as trunks or tree stumps. They were also a replacement for the suspension, which significantly simplified the overall structure of the chassis. With a large contact area on the ground, they also ensured that the vehicle did not sink in so quickly on soft surfaces.

Variants of the vehicle were built as a semitrailer tractor for transporting logs, as a flatbed with tarpaulin and as a chassis (probably also in combination with loading cranes or towing devices for the removal of logs from difficult terrain). A characteristic distinguishing feature was the very wide driver's cab with a three-part windshield.
