The MAZ-105 ( Russian МАЗ-105 , German transcription actually MAS-105) is a Belarusian articulated bus from the Minsky Avtomobilny Sawod . The vehicle was developed in the mid-1990s and, unlike many models from Western European manufacturers at the time, is an articulated train bus with a powered central axle and a drive formula of 6 × 2 (2). From 1997 onwards, a total of 1658 vehicles of this type were built in just under 21 years, the last six copies went to the local transport companies in the Belarusian city of Baranavichy in December 2017 . MAZ has been producing the successor MAZ-205 in series for a long time .

The history of the origins of bus production in Minsk, and thus also the history of the MAZ-105, goes back to the 1980s. At that time, the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic did not have its own production of buses. Instead, all buses from Hungary were obtained from Ikarus . Around 200 to 300 new buses were required every year. By the end of the 1980s, however, deliveries were already falling significantly and with the collapse of the Soviet Union they dried up completely.

Remedy could not be found as quickly as actually needed. As the largest vehicle manufacturer in Belarus, MAZ entered into a cooperative with Neoplan in the early 1990s and built a licensed version of the Neoplan N4014 NF with the MAZ-101 from 1993. The problem was that the vehicle cost around US $ 200,000, far too much for the Belarusian market. Instead, used Icarus buses were increasingly procured, for example from Germany. For the price of one MAZ-101 several vehicles could be bought. In addition, the new low-floor technology and the associated chassis design of the MAZ-101 was susceptible to poor roads, which often led to chassis damage.

It was not until 1996 that the Minski Awtomobilny Sawod managed to present and produce a more suitable model with the MAZ-103 . The MAZ-105 and the three-axle MAZ-107 were developed from this vehicle. The latter did not go into series production until 2004, the articulated bus as early as 1997.

Components of the bus were also supplied by German companies. The six-cylinder diesel engine, for example, comes from Mercedes-Benz and the automatic transmission from Voith . In addition, six-cylinder engines from Belarusian manufacture (MMZ) and from Renault were also available in the first few years , as well as a manual five-speed gearbox from Praga . The engine was housed in a separate compartment in the front of the car as a tower engine and installed at an angle of 7 ° to the vehicle's longitudinal axis, so that the power could be transmitted to the central axis by means of a cardan shaft. This made it possible to design the joint of the vehicle with much less effort, since the entire drive is located in the front of the vehicle and no forces have to be transferred to the trailer.

As a special feature with regard to the often winter conditions in the areas where the vehicles are used, the MAZ-105 was equipped with a limited slip differential . This makes it easier to get to bus stops in winter and on black ice. It can be activated from the driver's seat at the push of a button. Many parts, especially the steering, were standardized with those of the trucks from the Minsk factory in order to save production costs. In 2009 the look of the front section was revised.

The MAZ-105 has been delivered many times to Belarus, as well as to Russia , Poland , Kazakhstan , Ukraine and Cuba . The last six cars lined up in December 2017, the Belarusian Baranavichy , then put a MAZ production. Since then only the successors MAZ-205 and MAZ-215 have been produced. A total of 1658 copies were built in 21 years.
