Yelizaveta Alexandrovna Yermolayeva

Jelisaweta Alexandrowna Jermolajewa ( Russian Елизавета Александровна Ермолаева , English transcription Yelizaveta Yermolayeva ; * 1935 in Minsk ) is a former middle-distance runner who competed for the Soviet Union. She became European champion over 800 meters in 1958 .

At the Soviet championships in 1957, she won the 800-meter run before Nina Otkalenko . The winning time of 2: 05.6 min should remain her fastest time.

In 1958 she competed at the European Championships in Stockholm and won her preliminary run in 2: 10.1 minutes. In the final, the three runners from the Soviet Union, Dzidra Levicka , Vera Muchanowa and Yermolajewa , tried to break away from the rest of the field from the start. The three were in the lead up to 200 meters from the finish, then the British Diane Leather stormed up from behind , who had been second behind Otkalenko four years earlier. While Mukhanova fell away, Yermolajewa and Levicka fought the Briton on the home stretch. At the finish, Jermolajewa won in 2: 06.3 minutes with three tenths of a second ahead of Leather in second and Levicka.
