The Yerewanski Avtomobilny Sawod ( Armenian Երևանի ավտոմոբիլային գործարան , Russian Ереванский Автомобильный Завод ), also known as JerAZ or ErAZ for short , was a manufacturer of vans in the city of Yerevan . The company was founded in 1964 as a Soviet state-owned company and filed for bankruptcy in 2002.

At the later location of JerAZ, a factory for the production of forklifts had already existed. By decree of the Supreme Armenian Soviet of December 31, 1964, a plant for the production of small vans with a payload of 800 to 1000 kilograms was established in 1965.

During 1965, 66 workers were trained at UAZ in Russia and at the Riga bus factory , who later made up part of the plant's permanent workforce . In April 1966 the first two prototypes of the future small transporters based on the RAF-977 were presented , by December 36 vehicles of the new type JerAZ-762 had been built. Theoretically, the plant had a capacity of 400 cars per year at that time, and by 1968 this will be increased to 1000 vehicles per year. In June 1971, the JerAZ-762 pickup truck received an award at an exhibition in Moscow, and production of the improved JerAZ-762A variant began in September.

From 1974 to 1986 the company also developed and tested electric vehicles. There was no series production. In 1980 the plant's production capacity reached 13,000 automobiles a year. In 1982 the 100,000th vehicle rolled off the assembly line. By 1987 the production capacity increased further to around 16,100 vehicles per year.

In 1995 the state-owned company was privatized and converted into a joint stock company. Sales of the vehicles fell because JerAZ could not compete against Western manufacturers. Even a newly introduced model, the JerAZ-3730, was not profitable. The company went bankrupt in November 2002 and was eventually wound up in 2004. A producer of steel cables bought the factory in Yerevan at auction.

Vehicle models

The factory only produced three different models.

  • JerAZ-762 - small transporter ( panel van) The vehicle was built in series in different versions from 1966 to 1996, for more detailed information see there.
  • JerAZ-3218 - minibus, based on the JerAZ-3730.
  • JerAZ-3730 - panel van and successor to the JerAZ-762, similar to the JerAZ-3218.
