The ЯМЗ-240 , German transcription JaMS-240 , in Eastern Europe occasionally JaMZ-240 , internationally also YaMZ-240 , is a twelve-cylinder industrial diesel engine manufactured by the former Soviet and now Russian manufacturer Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod (JaMS). It is one of the largest modular motors from JaMS; The V8 engine JaMS-238 and the V6 engine JaMS-236 are structurally similar . The engine is mainly used in military vehicles, large commercial vehicles such as tractors and dump trucks.
Model
There are different types of the JaMS-240 engine, which in Russian are called Модификации , in German "modifications":
- ЯМЗ-240 (JaMS-240): basic model, free suction, 265 kW
- ЯМЗ-240Н (JaMS-240N): With exhaust gas turbochargers, 368 kW
- ЯМЗ-240Б (JaMS-240B): Free suction, with additional fan, 221 kW
source
The manufacturer modernized the engines over their construction period, so that the model was supplemented by the suffix "M" in combination with a number to mark the modernization. Another supercharged model was also introduced. Externally, the modernized models differ from the first models through modified cylinder head covers. The following modernized models are available:
- ЯМЗ-240М2 (JaMS-240M2): basic model, free suction, 265 kW
- ЯМЗ-240НМ2 (JaMS-240NM2): With exhaust gas turbochargers, 368 kW
- ЯМЗ-240БМ2 (JaMS-240BM2): Free suction, with additional fan, 221 kW
- ЯМЗ-240ПМ2 (JaMS-240PM2): With exhaust gas turbochargers, 309 kW

technical description
The JaMS-240 is a water-cooled four-stroke diesel engine with OHV valve control and twelve cylinders in a V-shaped fork design. The fork angle is 75 °, which is why the firing order is unusual (1–12–5–8–3–10–6–7–2–11–4–9). The JaMS-240 has a conventional in-line injection pump, direct injection and omega-shaped combustion bowls.
Engine block
The engine block is a cast piece made from special cast - a steel alloy. With the JaMS-240 the block is drawn very far down; it includes both the entire crankcase and both cylinder banks. It is stiffened in the lower area with cross ribs. The oil pan is bolted to the crankcase, the oil pump is built into the oil pan on the front of the engine. In the arch between the cylinder bank and the crankcase, an oil feed pump, the water pump - and, if available - the electric generator are screwed on on the right-hand side, and two oil filters and the starter motor are attached to the left. The injection pump is installed between the cylinder banks, the fuel return filters are mounted on the front of the engine.
Crank drive
The crankshaft is made of forged steel and has seven bearings. Two connecting rods are hinged next to each other for each crank pin; The connecting rods have recesses (so-called I-shaft connecting rods) and are made of steel in order to minimize moving masses. The pistons are made of aluminum and have floating piston pins made of steel. The combustion bowls in the pistons are omega-shaped. Three compression rings and two oil control rings are installed per piston as standard; an exception to this is the charged JaMS-240N, which has only one oil control ring per piston.
Cylinder heads
The engine has four cross-flow cylinder heads made of gray cast iron . They are interchangeable with each other. The intake pipes are located between the cylinder banks, the exhaust manifolds are led to the outside. Three cylinders each have a common exhaust manifold, which are flanged to each other in the free-suction models. In the JaMS-240N with exhaust gas turbocharging, the exhaust manifolds for each cylinder bank open into a common flange to which an exhaust gas turbocharger is flanged. The engine does not have charge air cooling. The water pipes to the cooler are installed above the suction pipes.
Valve train
The camshaft is installed in the engine block between the cylinder banks above the crankshaft. It is made of steel, has seven bearings and is driven by spur gears. It operates the hanging valves via tappets, push rods and rocker arms. The JaMS-240 has one inlet valve and one outlet valve per cylinder.
