Peter von Köppen ( Russian Пётр Иванович Кёппен Pjotr ​​Iwanowitsch Köppen ; * 7 February July / 18 February  1793 greg. In Charkow ; † 11 May July / 23 May  1864 greg. In Karabag ) was a Russian geographer , statistician and ethnographer .

Life

Origin and family

Köppen was a member of a Russian-German family. His father Johann Köppen (1752–1808) came from Schwedt and was the personal surgeon of the Landgravine of Hessen-Kassel before he and 24 other doctors were called to her court by Catherine II in 1786, and later headed the medical department in the Charkow governorate to be. His mother was Karolina born in Hamburg . Schultz (1777-1851).

He married Alexandrine, the daughter of Friedrich von Adelungs (1768–1843), and had three daughters and four sons with her. Including:

Career

Köppen studied in Kharkov and graduated in 1814 with a master's degree in law . After that he found a job at the Oberpostdirektion in St. Petersburg. In the years 1817 to 1820 he made several trips through Russia including the Baltic Governments . At the end of 1825 he was in Tubingen for Dr. phil. PhD . He was later an official at the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.

Köppen was the holder of the Constantine Medal of the Russian Geographical Society and a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences .
