The ZIS-112 ( Russian ЗИС-112 ) was a futuristic coupé from the manufacturer ZIS with an idiosyncratic, aerodynamic body reminiscent of the Studebaker Commander (1950) and the Buick Le Saber concept car (1951). A first prototype was developed in 1951.

Vehicle history

The sports car was powered by an eight-cylinder in-line engine that developed 140 hp with a displacement of 6.0 liters. The engine came from the ZIS-110 , but was too weak for the 2450 kg vehicle. In 1952 the power of the engine was increased by a new double carburetor and further modifications up to 182 HP. The top speed was 204 km / h. The greater weight of the engine made driving behavior very unstable. In 1954, both the chassis and the body were shortened by 600 mm, saving around 500 kg. The engine was revised again and then made 192 hp, the top speed was 210 km / h. This made the ZIS-112/2 the fastest Soviet car of its time. In the same year a roadster version of the ZIS-112 was presented.

The ZIS-112 was successfully used by Boris Kurbatow in various national races. The sports car was only used for propaganda purposes and was only produced in small numbers.

Further revisions were made in 1956. At the same time, the model was renamed ZIL-112/2 in the course of de-Stalinization . It again had a more powerful eight-cylinder in-line engine from the ZIS-110 and a greatly shortened wheelbase, which was now only 2160 mm. For comparison: the first model from 1951 had a wheelbase of 3760 mm. The engine developed 170 hp, so the vehicle reached about 200 km / h.

Due to constant improvements and changes to the vehicles, different versions were created, which were designated as ZIL-112/1 to ZIL-112/5. They also formed the transition to the successor ZIL-112S , which received a new and visually completely different body.
