The ZIS-8 , ( Russian ЗИС-8 ), was a bus made by the Soviet manufacturer Zavod imeni Stalina , or ZIS for short. It was technically based on the ZIS-5 truck , which was widespread in the Soviet Union at the time. Today, there is no longer a completely original copy of the vehicle known.

description

Little is known about the history of the bus. What is clear is that series production began in 1934. Depending on the source, it ended again in 1936 or 1938. The engine of the same name was taken over from the ZIS-5 truck . The chassis came from the ZIS-11, a version of the ZIS-5 with a long wheelbase. The body was made in composite construction. The basic structure consisted of wooden beams and boards, which were then planked with sheet steel.

Also in 1934 a prototype of a three-axle bus with comfort equipment was made, but it never went into series production. The vehicle was called ZIS-lux . It was based on an extended chassis of the three-axle ZIS-6 . It is particularly noteworthy that there was already a radio in the passenger compartment of the ZIS-Lux . The body shape was much more modern than that of the ZIS-8 and was similar to the later ZIS-16 .

Whereabouts

It is unclear whether there are well-preserved specimens of the vehicle. A bus (the one pictured above in blue and white color scheme) was extensively restored by classic car enthusiasts in 2011 after it had obviously been used as a trailer for a long time and then as a shed. However, only parts of the frame and axles have been preserved in their original form. The entire wooden structure had to be remade from old photographs. In addition, there is at least one vehicle copy that was made for filming.
