Inquisition is a Colombian / American thrash and black metal band.

history

Inquisition was founded in 1988 by Dagon in Cali , Colombia, under the name Guillotine and at that time played Thrash Metal in the style of Sadus and Kreator . For Dagon, this is a phase of learning and of both musical growth and ideological development towards what Inquisition is today. Initially, there were no demos or other official recordings, but there was a rehearsal room recording, which, according to Dagon, could theoretically appear underground , and a video-recorded performance of the band when they first performed live and in the opening act of Nemesis and Reencarnacion in 1988 . Dagon also sees this time as the birth of the Inquisition. In 1989 the band was renamed, which initially meant the only change and, according to Dagon, was also necessary because he heard of other bands called Guillotine.

The first EP was recorded in September 1990 and published in 1991; the songs were written in 1989, but could not be recorded for financial reasons. On the other hand, Dagon considers it advantageous that the band has been able to improve performance in the meantime. The EP was originally supposed to appear in an edition of 500 copies, but only about 400 were published due to problems with the press shop.

In 1993 the demo cassette Forever Under was released , on which the band played a raw and dark form of Thrash Metal from the late phase of the genre, in which it was replaced by Death Metal and the Northern European Black Metal circle grew. The titles were from 1990, some of them could not be recorded for the EP in 1990 for financial reasons. The demos were manually transferred by Dagon without keeping an eye on the number of copies distributed. If you listen carefully, according to Dagon, you can hear the roots of what influenced Inquisitions' style today in these early releases.

In the mid-1990s the band changed their style; on the EP Incense of Rest she mixed blastbeat- heavy Death Metal with traditional, melodic Black Metal in medium tempo, with the vocals alternating between growling and screaming .

From the album Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult , the band played their own style, which they then retained without major changes.

In 2002 about 200 copies of Forever Under were made by a Colombian label, but these factory cartridges are difficult to find.

The German label No Colors Records offered Inquisition a release of the debut album as a double LP; since the band no longer had a label after the end of War Hammer Records, it was also discussed to switch completely to No Colors Records. Since then, all of Inquisition's albums have been released there.

In 2006, Nuclear War Now! Productions the first two official records together under the title Anxious Death / Forever Under on CD and Gatefold double LP, of which 700 are regular copies on black 180 gram vinyl with A2 poster and insert and 300 as "Die-hard" - Version on picture LP and colored 180 gram vinyl with A2 poster, two inserts, woven patch and sticker.

style

In the mid-1990s, the band switched from Thrash Metal to a mixture of blastbeat- heavy Death Metal with traditional, melodic Black Metal in a medium tempo, with the vocals alternating between growling and screaming . Andrew Lewandowski wrote in the Chronicles of Chaos that the EP Incense of Rest , which is the only Inquisitions publication in this style, is a "solid, albeit unspectacular, debut". The band has the potential to become one of the better bands on the scene.

Characteristic of Inquisition's musical style since the debut album Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult , whose independence is often emphasized in reviews, are repetition and Dagon's vocals. The repetitions create hypnotic passages. Inquisitions guitar playing mixed black and heavy metal - riffing . The band has been playing without a bass player since their second album Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan , as Dagon and Incubus had great problems finding someone with the right mentality and no drug problem. But Dagon's guitar is bass-heavy.

Dagon's monotonous, spoken style of singing is described as unemotional, inhuman and unique and polarizes the listener. It is often described in English-language reviews as croak (' croak ' with ravens and crows , ' croak ' with frogs ), which also brings comparisons with the sounds of ravens or frogs in the reviews.

On Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan , the production was "overall a bit more powerful, bass-heavy and punchy". Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer shows more tempo changes and more elaborate song structures, but does not deviate from largely monochromatic and repetitive riffs. At the same time, the songs became shorter overall.

Sound, music style, voice, concept and musical execution aim to remove the listener from his current state of just listening to music. The listener should reflect on the fact that Black Metal goes beyond music and image. Dagon regards the songs as rituals, he describes the singing as the vocal evocations of ancient gods; the drums, which he calls the “pagan war drum”, and the guitar melodies are supposed to conjure up demons. When writing the songs, Dagon makes sure that the atmosphere in the studio can also emerge at concerts. Individual songs that could not be performed live because of elements such as a lead passage on a second guitar are not played at concerts. Most of the music is intended for performing, however, and many listeners have told Dagon that they didn't like Inquisition until they saw the band live.

Dagon is inspired by many different styles of music, less recently by metal. His greatest influence on Black Metal is Bathory's The Return ...... , but Burzum , the early works of Immortal and the essence of the Polish Black Metal scene, whose circles he has long admired, are also important inspirations for him.

ideology

The ideology is based on Satanism ; Dagon describes Black Metal as music that speaks for Satan and proves the existence of his power and black magic . Black Metal can, in Dagon's opinion, adopt any form of anti-Christianity, but must be based on the recognition of Satan as the foundation of Black Metal. It is at the same time music that creates an ideology and the result of an ideology. Black metal is the music that must inspire wisdom to be learned from the shadows, and the dark torch of death and destruction with the sole aim of ending the faith of Jews and Christians in Jesus Christ and YHWH . Lucifer proves to them that man is by nature his own god and is moving away from the monopoly of false gods. The documentation archive of the Austrian resistance interpreted Dagon's statement on belief in Jesus and YHWH and one from 2002 that he had "dark thoughts like killing Jews, Christians and other insects". The song title Crush the Jewish Prophet caused criticism several times. In 2014 it was claimed that the band members were neo-Nazis. However, Dagon denied this in an interview.

Dagon sees his spirit as as old as time itself, so when writing the songs for the band, he has old and cryptic inspirations in modern times. Dagon is inspired by art such as old woodblock prints with demonic representations. He is also inspired by occult books on black magic, demonology, and satanic studies. He refers to the Christian and Kabbalistic interpretations of Satan and Lucifer and not to the philosophical neo-Satanism. He regards theistic Satanism in comparison to "modern" as a path to the left hand of Satanism, as the "dark side of the dark side". But both forms of Satanism are equally necessary. In addition, the gods of the Babylonian religion are of great importance to him. Often times, the Inquisition focuses on Baphomet , whom Dagon identifies as the Templar god of war .

In Dagon's opinion, the propaganda conveyed by music should reach a wide audience, with bands not being allowed to compromise their attitudes in order to reach more people. Terrorist actions against hostile religions and their followers are the only things that have to remain underground.

It is important to the band that their members share their orientation, so Dagon and Incubus play without other musicians.
