The reigning world champion Uruguay was able to assert itself as expected in Group III as second. 2-0 against the Czechoslovaks and a 7-0 against the overwhelmed Scots were enough for the quarter-finals. Even the strong Austrians left nothing to be desired. Scotland were defeated 1-0 and Czechoslovakia 5-0. After the end of the games, Austria was determined by drawing lots to be the group winner in Group 3.
