The South Korean Marines or Marine Infantry of the Republic of Korea ( Hangeul : 대한민국 해병대, English : Republic of Korea Marine Corps , abbreviated ROKMC ) is the marine infantry of the armed forces of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) .

Although it is theoretically subordinate to the Chief of Naval Operations of the Navy , it represents a separate armed force . It comprises 29,000 soldiers , was founded as a reconnaissance group shortly before the Korean War and took part in the Vietnam War. The current commander in chief is Lieutenant General Lee Ho-yeon .

Combat Unit, Marine Corps South Korea

On April 15, 1949, the force was deployed at Deoksan Airfield near Jinhae . A large part of the weapons came from stocks of the Japanese army . During the Korean War , the unit fought at Jinju and Jeju-do .

Organization and task

The Republic of Korea Marine Corps has 29,000 soldiers and is divided into two divisions and one brigade . Its main job is to secure South Korean islands.
